1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.
mtn. biking 101
2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

i am considering upgrading from my trek 4300. i will be using it on and off road but i like the flexibility of doing some mtnbing, but mostly trails and road riding. i am still a novice but i love this bike.

I think it is a mediocre deal, unless he wants to go down to $450 or so. Here is a comparable one in colorado springs. it is an 08 and is only $700.

I learned that the costly components are the fork and wheels.

The ad lists it as a '07 at $1100. He's willing to drop the price $400?

Yeah a RUSH is a XC version of the Prophet. It's an awesome rig! if it fits that might be a good deal if they drop the price a bit. the components are a bit on the lower end side but really good parts none the less...... I'd wave 4 bills under his nose and see if he bites!

I learned that the costly components are the fork and wheels.yeah. im sure there is better deals out there on CL . but i live in north nj. and everything is over priced. but i really like the bike. although im not sure which rush it is.

can anybody guess what model rush it is. ? http://newjersey.craigslist.org/bik/1671423729.html

anyway if i dont end up buying the rush from CL . i might just buy something new, but i cant afford a bike like the rush brand new.

Don't do it. Get the bike that fits you properly to begin with, don't try to do bandaids like a really high seat, etc.

Sorry, I can not really say if that is a good deal or not, but I would suggest that you keep both bikes, and set one up for road riding and one for trail. Unless you do not ride very rough trails and can get by with somewhat smooth tires on you trail bike. Regular MTB tires won't last long if the see mostly pavement.
