1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

How to remove RaceFace Cranks (Pics)

Taking apart a bike I purchased used just to go through and service everything. I am ready to take the cranks off (RaceFace Next SL).....how do I do so? I took the cap off but the arm doesn't want to just slide off. Please help me with my next step.

Did you remove a cap and then the bolt?
I believe you are supposed to leave the cap in place and undo the bolt. The bolt will push against the cap and extract the crank off the BB.

You need one of these or like tool from a different brand. Instructions on how to use are at the link as well.

Park Tool Co. CWP-7 : Universal Crank Puller for Square Taper and Splined Cranks : Crank Tools

Beat me to it...Tool in post above is the same, just has its own handle.
