Getting into mountain biking and was looking at purchasing my first serious bike. I will be doing mostly wooded area riding, fourwheeler trails, cross country mixture. I have the money to spend up to around 12-1300 but if I can spend less and get the same value that would be great. The two bikes
I have narrowed it down to are a Used 2011 trek Cobia vs a 2013 cannondale trail 29er sl2. I can get the 2011 Cobia for 750. It has only been rode for commuting in town and is in good condition. The 2013 is 1199 and being purchased from a lbs with 25$ off of future tune ups and free adjustments for first year.
My main question is should I get the cobia for 750 then just upgrade parts as needed and have better components and still eventually get up to the 1200-1300. Or I have heard the cannondale frames are better than the trek cobia frames so I might be ahead to go with the sl2. But is the 500$ difference worth it just for the frame since most of the components are pretty much equal on both bikes.
Here is a link to component comparison.
