1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

New question here. Help on getting first bike.

Hi. I am interested in getting my first bike but am not sure what to look out for. Also does not have much understanding about the parts to look for. I would like to do off road riding. In Singapore, if I am not wrong, there is not much technical stuffs in the trail so I am not sure if it is really needed for me to up my budget to get full suspension. I am currently interested in this two bike.
    1) Merida Big seven 500- Big 7 500 Specifications | 2014 Bike Range | MERIDA Australia
    2) Polygon Cozmic CX 3.0- Official Website of Polygon Bikes - The International brand for Quality Bikes

Of course I am always open for suggestion but would like to keep my budget as low as I can.
Hope you guys can give some input though I know that there might be some similar post out there.
Thanks in advance for the help.

They seem similar in spec except one is a 27.5 and the other is a 26.
I ride them, if possible, and if close lean towards the Merida.
