1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

Good tutorial on calibrating/fixing my brakes?

I have disc brakes, and lately, I've had to press the brake lever almost to the end before I feel the brake actually working.

I"m a beginner, so I'm looking for an easy-to-follow tutorial/video that explains how to calibrate these brakes, or change them if necessary.

Depends on the brand and model. Are they hydraulic? Youtube probably has vids. I would use the search terms "how to adjust xxxx brakes" and "change pads on xxxx brakes". They might also need a bleed if they are hydraulic, but I would check the pads first.

you should be able to adjust your barrel at end of brake to tighten cable some. Unscrew it to make it tighter.
then as mentioned you can do a search on "how to adjust bike brake levers range"
and see a video for that specific item.

that is good one to see.
