1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

Is this a good first purchase, for the asking price?

I'm looking at an '09 Gary Fisher Wahoo for about $575 taxes in. It was listed in the store at $550 but they offered to take it down to $489 plus taxes.

I would have figured they would try to get rid of it for about $400 considering it's a 2009 and the 2012s are around the corner
After skimming some of these threads, I'm beginning to wonder if I could find a better deal or maybe get a better deal on this bike itself?

Basically I want to use it for riding in the suburbs and doing some trails, in a ratio of 70/30.
I don't want a hybrid as I find the wheels to be a bit too thin for my liking.

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

off topic, where is LHS and what does the acronym stand for?
Saw it a few times but not in full name. lol

My 2012 Wahoo 29er was ~$610 out the door of the Trek Store.
I love my 29er and i have had it on the trails a few times already and plan to use it around town as well.
