1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

    Is this a good bike?

I dont have a lot of money to spend on a bike. But I need a new one (my old walmart mongoose is thrashed). I saw this on craigslist, its a Raleigh M9000. Is it any good? he said it is late 90's with Roxshocks. Here is the link to the bike: Rayleigh M9000

Depends on the asking price. Raleigh is a LBS brand though, so it won't suck suck. Have you ridden it? A shock that old may need some rebuilding, which might negate the "good deal" of buying used on CL.

Do you know what size frame you need. Does the bike fit you, if it doesnt fit its not a deal and that rear shock is elastomer and 17 years old so it may be hard to find the parts to service the rear shock

I dont know what Size it is, I'll ask him. I'm about 6' tall, I went to a bike shop and they said 19" frame would do me well. Would I have to find parts for the old one, or could I replace it with a new one? or would that not be cost affective? I dont know what a new shock costs...

If that rear shock needs service, you are probably outta luck finding parts. If you are going to get a bike that old, get a hard tail. Old FS bikes are usually a money pit.
