1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

    Front Derailleur Setup

I just picked up a Deore FD from Jenson, which was not in its original packaging but is supposedly still brand new. After mounting my new FD I put new jagwire shifter cables on, went to start setting it up and my High and low adjustment screws seem to have no effect on the FD. I've done some research and can't find anything to remedy the problem. I have tried adjusting it with and without cable tension and it still has no effect. Could anyone direct me so I can get a ride in tomorrow?

Did you buy the right one? Top pull vs bottom pull?, Some Shimano can do both so check your cable routing.

I don't see how that is possible. If you use your hand to force the derailleur to the outside chainring and adjust the Hi limit screw, you should be able to feel the limit screw moving the cage.
Depends what you mean "has no effect". If the derailleur is setup correctly the limit screws will not seem to do anything.

Thanks for the reply guys, after a bit more research and some more time fiddling with it I was able to adjust it. I got a little frustrated too quickly and jumped the gun posting on here. Rode 12 miles today and it didn't miss a beat.
