    Fork for old Trek 4300?

Hi, I just got back into mountain biking after years of road biking. I have an old Trek 4300, 2004 model without disc brakes. The fork suspension no longer functions and I was looking to upgrade it. I was wondering what would work as most forks seem to be for disc brakes now it seems? Is it worth upgrading? Everything else on the bike works perfect. Thanks for the help

It depends on what you plan to do on your mountain bike. I think a basic rigid fork is better than a crappy suspension fork. Apparently the 2004 4300 had a 70mm fork. You could probably run an 80 mm fork and be just fine, but you have to find a functioning fork with canti mounts and get the headset swapped over. I think you could get something decent for under $300. If everything else on the bike is perfect, that might be worth it. Otherwise, ride it as-is and save your pennies for a more trail-worthy bike.

Forks now are disc only. I can't even think of a quality fork that can be used with rim brakes new. I'd look at used forks on ebay. Which model is going to depend on what's for sale and what your price limit. At 80mm travel you're looking at lower end forks anyways. Going to 100 or 120 may make it ride really weird.

    Possibly consider a Surly 1X1 canti/V rigid fork (413mm "length"). I love mine @ $68 list price.
