1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

Probably not. The shift is likely to feel pretty ridiculous too. Maybe just stick with a triple?

That is too big of a gap. Most Derailleurs are not capable of doing that.

I assume you are going to replace the middle ring with the outer ring. It won't cost you anything to try.
It will be quite the shift - about 5 cogs difference when you shift the front.

I've got to wonder what sort of gearing you're runing in back and what sort of trail you plan on tackling when you need a 22/42. Do you just have these gears laying around and are trying to get something to work? I'd look at doing 26/38 or 28/42.

lol quick and simply, that's all you need. I like the idea but I don't think it will work. The gap is huge!

I have 24 and 38 on my kona process, don't think you could get any bigger of a split and it's enough gearing for everything but really fast road riding in my experience
