1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

Walmart doesn't even know how to assemble bikes. At least ***** has a designated person to build the bikes. That can be hit or miss like any place else, but chances are at walmart joe is building bikes then goes over to hang up clothes and then goes over to build fixtures and help in gardening.

DB is a good beginner bike for the price point even with the somewhat recreational geometry.

Get the Response if those are your choices. I have a 2006 model and it's been nothing but fun and totally bomb proof. All I have ever done is replace a chain and a rear cassette due to my beginer skills didn't watch for chain stretch. Other than that I cleaned it and lubed it...no cable snaps od anything.

So yes....go with the Response 150% you will be happy.
