1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

Couple pics of my new bike :)

Researched this site for a few weeks and tried out a few bikes. I wanted a good quality, fun to ride hardtail...it was ended up being between the Cannondale SL3 and the Specialized Rockhopper....and the winner was....

    2012 Specialized Rockhopper

Took it out for a 20km ride this weekend over a paved trail and some single track. Nothing to crazy but enough to break in the bike and get a good feel for it. Feelsgoodman!

A friend of mine bought a Rockhopper a few days ago. It was a lower end model with the Avid BB5s, but I was still impressed at the value.

    It was a decent bike.

Nice bike. Now go and beat the sh*t out of it.

One more thing, lose the reflectors. They'll end up snapping off anyway.

Already commented on your other thread.

OP - why nothing crazy? If I got a new bike, I'd be on my way to the top of the riding spot with the most vert. within 45 minutes' drive...
