1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

I think most would agree that the Blur LT is the more highly acclaimed one between those two. But, I could be biased, because I ride one.

Is the price quite different between both ?

Are you buying them from a LBS or online ?

Only by the name, I'd said Santa Cruz...

Marin are nice, but still has a lot of low end bikes in their line up.

Both are second hand with less than 300 miles on the bikes. the santa cruz is $1700 also.
    santa cruz spec:
    Sram x.9 shifters and deraileurs.
    Juicy Seven disc brakes.
    Fox RP3 rear shock
    Fox Float Trail Tune Fork.
Race Face Deux XC bar and stem,
    Thompson Elite Stem and Seatpost.
    San Marco racing saddle.
    Truative crank
    Egg beater pedals
Mavic rims and Kenda Nevegal tires.
    Marin MV 5.7:
upgraded wheels, Brakes(Avid Juicy 7' Disk Hydrolic), Pedals (Crank Brothers Candy's), crank and drivetrain (XT) the rest is stock.

overall which is better. Input greatly appreciated. ive read both bikes reviews and cant seem decide which one.

Well from what I can see from the santa cruz spec you gave me, you can't go wrong with it...

For the Marin, the spec you gave look good, but the Cruz SRAM/Deus/Fox/Mavic/etc components just scored me

    Check also for the weight.

Thanks. Besides the components that it has, overall which bike has a better frame, frame geometry and suspension travel?

Just make sure you really check over the Santa Cruz when you see it. That is a real bikers bike and I wouldn't trust someone saying they only put 300 miles on it. You don't buy a Santa Cruz to leave it in your garage.

Life happens, I have a 09 Compulsion 1, no cheapie.

I bought it hoping a new high dollar bike would motivate me and it did, for a little while, then other things kept taking priority.

I just got re-motivated to start riding again, so including my 5 rides over the last 2 weeks, It may have maybe 10 rides total on it or less than 70 miles.

Granted my case my be rare, but if you're lucky you could find someone like me that has to sell.

I have a 2010 Mt Vision, and I would happily trade the frame for a Blur LT.

I find the suspension of the Mt Vision good for some certain applications (smoother trails with some drops and jumps), but I don't think it is too versatile. On rocky, rough trails the 120mm rear travel feels more like 90-100mm tops.
15mm is a second-best solution to a problem that was already solved.

Can't go wrong with a Santa Cruz.

does that mount vision have the suspension links around the top tube? I rented one of those in Copper Harbor and hit my knees on those like 50 times that day, it was annoying... if they had rented Blur LTs it wouldn't even have been a decision to me... I'd get the SC

Also, it's considered a bit of a hooligan's mountain bike...so if you get one, you're instantly a badass (maybe).

Yes it does, and your complaint is one that was common enough for them to redesign the links to be a little more knee-friendly in 2010.
