1. The most important thing about buying a new
bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right
for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches
your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.
|
 |
2. If possible, try to find a shop that will
let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut
it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should
be no different.
|
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because
your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean
that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your
needs and ability.

Never underwear.
Except when not on the bike. Then? Almost always.
Please.

Most folks say no underwear, and by all means try it. However, I wear non-cotton briefs to keep my junk tucked away and do not suffer chafing. My rides are relatively short though (1 to 2 hours), so all day epics might be different.
Use it, use it, use it while you still have it.

No underwear.
But the primary problems with underwear are sitting on something that's bunched, sitting on something that gets waterlogged, or sitting on a seam. Cycling shorts didn't always have a chamois, especially back when it was actually a leather thing.

When you put cotton between yourself and the chamois, you're negating the effect of that chamois, in terms of moisture wicking and comfort.
It's like asking for chafing.

I just wear compression shorts (underarmour) under baggy soccer type shorts - no padding, no shammy and I'm fine. No chafing or other unpleasantness. My rides are short (1-2hrs) and I wouldn't be surprised if longer rides needed chamois/padding but for me, I'm good to go. I once wore underwear under my baggies instead of the compression shorts and it was much more irritating and uncomfortable.
I wouldn't wear underwear under compression shorts.

No underwear for best results, but you can probably get by with underwear for a time. If you have any discomfort or chaffing it is due to the underwear. The chamios should be tight to the skin and hold all the bits tightly in place. That is how they are designed to work.
