Chain Lube Questions.

Hello All...

Up till recently, I was using TriFlo on my chain. But after reading a lot of reviews, I settled on Rock n Roll Gold and Extreme for when it rains.

Now I applied the lube to the chain (dirty), and found that in no time at all, the chain became very noisy and the shifting quite harsh. So I decided to clean the chain (I have a Parks chain cleaner). Oddly, there was a greasy residue left in the Parks tool.

Question: Is this greasy residue left after degeasing the Rock n Roll lube or the Triflo..??

Right now, my chain, cassette and front chainrings are spotless. I am really unable to decide on the best lube to use. I have on hand:
- Rock n Roll Gold,
- Rock n Roll Extreme,
- TriFlo.

Ideas...??? Comments...???

Thanks..!!!

Tri-Flow sounds like a better lube for you. It matters more that you use lube, vs. determining which lube.

I use wet lube (like Tri-Flow) when I ride around town. When I travel out of town to dessert environments, I switch to a dry lube.

Tri flow is a very thin lube and it has properties to thin out and "moisten" other thicker lubes. What this has most likely done with repeated use is sort of dissolve the factory lube from withing the rollers in the chain. Its not really a good thing to clean and degrease a chain. That factory grease is the best stuff for the long haul. Sure cleaning makes your chain look pretty, but it dries out and you need to replace it every year. Since yours is already cleaned out, you can try a number or things to lube it again. One trick I used a lot (I know not everyone can do this) is to vaccuum seal the chain in a bag with lube. It helps penetrate all of the voids in your chain. I usually use a wax lube which is my preference but that may lead to having to do this more often.

I use Dupont teflon chain saver , $6 at lowes, chain stays clean and quiet and I only lube it once every couple (2-3 weeks, I ride 3-5 times a week)

The lube you use doesn't make it the end all, be all for lube. It's just lube. It's not a big deal.
