1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

    BMX Parts on MTB

I want to add some BMX grips to my 31.8mm easton bar but I don't know what the dimensions are of the BMX grips. I also want to add some BMX pedals to my Race Face Cranks so I'm hoping the thread and pitch are the same. BMX pedals are 9/16 supposedly. If you guys have any info on this I would appreciate it.

both should work. just double check those pedals are 9/16 and not 1/2 like some bmx pedals.

I searched on google and it seems that BMX grips have a nominal diameter of 22 mm or so. Would that be too big of a stretch for the 31.8mm MTB bars?

The 31.8mm of the bar refers to the diameter in the center - where the stem clamps the bar. The BMX grips should fit without issues. Bar use a standard diameter on the outside (where the grips go).

The pedals should fit, too. 9/16" is standard for BMX/MTB pedals.
