1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

There are many specific brands out there. Many will tell you to check Craigslist, the Lbs, and any other avenue and find a well maintained used bike for that price range. Stay away from department store bikes. Most can't hold up to the punishment. I check Craigslist daily. The deals are out there just have to be willing to look for them. My choices in no order cannonade, specialized, trek. Those are the main beginner level bikes I see. Bikesdirect.com may also be an option.

You need to define your needs more ,what kind of riding are you going to do,how often? Do you see yourself getting into riding 4 or 5 days a week? Within a price range bikes are very much alike ,find the one that fits you .Go to some shops and test ride as many bikes as you can stand.
