The Battle between Good and Evil....

    Hello friends.

Im in a dillema right now.
Im about to pull the trigger on my first ever full-susser.
Did all the necessary research and test drives and I have come to
    the final 2 choices.

In my opinion, these 2 are almost equally the same.

Now I need your help on deciding if I should go Black or White.

Appreciate all the help I can get from you guys...

(PS: The force of the "Dark" side is strong! )

    The "GOOD"

    Specialized Stumpjumper Comp 2010

    OR

    The "EVIL"

    Giant Reign 2 2010 (corrected, thanks to NORDSTERN1 )

    thanks!

Hahaha, that is sweet! One of my buddy in Japan was able to get an ECU tuned by Takeda for the 4AGE BT and sent that to me. Together with some forged pistons and
tuned camshafts. Oh well, I've done my time in motorsports and now Im into pedalling hahaha!

Peeps, pardon us about the talk, that's actually a Toyota Corolla we are talking about.
The AExxx is the body code and the 4AGE blacktop is the engine type.

Now peeps, please chip in your 0.02 cents on this.
Im about to pull the trigger on this one, as in within 48 Hours time.

    Thanks.

Dude, you're choosing between a Stumpjumper & a Trance right? Just wanna clear things out because you posted a pic of a Reign 2...

By the way, if it was between the Stumpy & the Trance, i'd go with the Trance.

    No problem bud!

Since that is the case, i'd still go for the Giant. Nothing against the Stumpy...i like it, looks sick but i'm a fan of Giant's Maestro suspension & i find their kits give you great value for your money.

    I also like black...

Wow, so messed up... when I saw the spec, I thought THAT was the evil!

Seriously - I'd pick the Giant. Its a marginally better bike (though you'd be happy with either) and giant aren't as nasty a company as specialized.
There's something about spec and its business practices (and the recent epic designs thing is a prime example of this) that just makes me want to go out of my way to avoid giving them my money (basically researching to find equally good or better products just so I can justify not buying spec) - they do make good bikes though.

Evil. Suspension design is better-regarded. I haven't had the opportunity to try either bike, though, so don't count my opinion for too much.

    Hahaha!

Awesome peeps here on the forum hahaha!

So far, here's the official tally as of now.

    Good = 6
    Evil = 15

It seems that the DARKSIDE is winning and
    Ataylor's idea is pretty wicked...

If I'll be getting the Giant one, it will be known as ...
    The Reign of EVIL

    Keep it coming peeps.

What's really messed up is that the Giant IS the Specs father. I saw it on Maury last week.

I can almost hear the Giant saying to the Spec..

Is it me, or are you comparing two different types of bikes? Seems to me it is a matter of whether you want a lighter, shorter travel bike of heavier, longer travel one.

Decide that first, and then compare apples to apples. The Trance is a better comparison to the Stumpy, and the Enduro is an appropriate comparison to the Reign.

I vote Evil not just because of the color (Personally I love black and don't get the appeal of white Mtn bikes, they will always look dirty IMO) but also look where the Spec. water bottle holder is. If you want to use it, you better have looong arms

I can't vote because I don't know your riding style. Both look like nice bikes though.

I still use a bottle on quick after work rides because I can't stand loading and lugging around my MULE unless I have too. I live on a mountain with a decent trail system, so it's a "short" hike home if anything breaks

Well the white will look prettier at first. But after a few months of riding it will look like crap. The black will look badass when new and badasserer when beat up. The white is like a 9th degree black belt. Poised, disiciplined, exact. The black one is like Ash from army of darkness. Loud, brutish, insulting. But way more entertaining. Oh and most people are just dropping turbo miata or s2000 engines in their ae86s now. The black top has the five valves and the 11,000 rpm redline and all. But torque is still better. My 2 cents.
In the great Ford vs Chevy debate, I choose Porsche.

    Hello peeps!

    Sorry for the late reply

Anyways, I was busy trying out both the Giant Reign and The Specialized Stumpy over the
weekend. The lbs on my neighborhood are quite awesome and let me try a couple of both
    brands.

    I tried the following:

    Giant
    Reign 1 2010
    Reign 2 2010

    Specialized
    Stumpy Comp 2010
    Pitch Pro 2009

The Reign 1 and Stumpy Comp are almost at the same price range but the Reign 1 takes
the cake. The ride on the Reign was plush and responsive. Also, I find the sitting angle on
the Reign more comfortable against the Stumpy.

The Reign 2 and Pitch Pro 2009 was at the same price level since the Pitch Pro was on
    clearance.

Initially, I tried the Pitch Pro. After the shocks were calibrated and adjusted
to my weight, I found that the Pitch Pro is a very well capable machine. The only thing
I really noticed is how "stiff" the RS Pike was. Although it managed to impress on short
downhill, the rebound is somewhat on the harsh side.

The last I tried was the "EVIL" Reign 2 2010. As most of you have suggested, well, the
Reign 2 is the Bi-@tch! The ride was no different with the Reign 1. Plush, Responsive,
all angle felt right and the stance is amazing. And the darn thing is also a LOOKER

So as of this time, the actual count is at

    Good = 11
    Evil = 20

And the winner is of course...

    Thanks peeps!

I really appreciate your inputs on this one.
I'll post some pix once I get the Reign 2.

    Hahaha

    Thanks Hill.

Anyways, guys, the only thing I noticed with the Reign 2, is that the Fox Fork doesn't have
    a lock-out.

    How important is this really?
Do I need this while riding uphill on pave road?
Will this be a negative factor especially for brake-dives?

Good call on the Reign! I find I'm consistently disappointed every time I try (or try to like) Spec; overpriced, overhyped, and weak performance, IMO; although their bikes are freaking sexy, I think I just like the look.

While I like having a lockout on my fork, is it a necessity? Nah, you can totally make do; especially on paved road. If anything, just rock what you've got for a while and consider upgrading if you find a wicked discount somewhere.

... Just my $0.01. I'm still new to all this so take any advice with a grain of salt....

I can't find it right now, but BikeSnobNYC posted a video from Specialized's marketing department in which one of their designers talks about how important it was that the new Stumpjumper Hardtails look fast. These designers all have to be paid, and the tooling changes in the manufacturing facilities necessary to execute their design tweaks all cost money. BikeSnob asks in his blog if he can have a fast bike without the extra design work for a few hundred less.

I gotta say that when I find out where I can get one of these mythical $300 disposable superlight aluminum race hardtails, I'm never going to buy another kind of frame. Any bike looks fast under the right rider.

    Peeps,

I've just gotten the "Evil One" hehehe!
Took it for a quick spin in the park and it is Awesome!

Also, I got a couple of goodies from my local LBS.
(Giant and Fox stickers and some other stuff)

    I'll post some pix later.

I need to first wipe this stupid HUGE GRIN on my face!

Is it really a less capable design?

I don't know too much about the science of frame designs. Please enlighten me.

    Make sure you include references.

    I'm seriously interested.

OK. I know I asked you a tough question up there and it will probably take you a while to answer that with a serious answer so in the mean time, I'd like to offer you a rebuttal to your response.

First off, I don't think I'm completely off when I say that the performance capability of either bikes can vary depending on each rider and their preferences. I don't think that there is an unanimous vote on one bike that is the top of everything, from what I've read so far on many different brands of bikes out there. Even if a majority vote is on a single bike, that does not make it absolutely better.

Secondly, I believe that a final purchase decision should be based mostly on personal preferences rather than opinions even if those opinions are well founded. Just because 4 out of 5 dentists prefer Dentine doesn't mean that you shouldn't be chewing Juicy Fruit. If we comply to every decisions based on popular or expert opinions, then why do we even need brands to choose from? Just pick the best and pull everything else out of the market.

If I am to make a bad analogy...
Let's pretend that a Pontiac Sunfire is a better performing car than a Honda Civic. If you buy a Civic instead of a Sunfire, are you an idiot? Even if the Sunfire can perform twice as well as the Civic, I'd still buy the Civic. It's a preference thing and yes, aesthetics is a big part of my decision on this.

Now going back to my quote, I said "Esthetically, the Speciallized has a better designed frame than the Giant for sure."

It was a personal opinion and I have no desire to twist the OP's arm. (Mind you, I am right about the better design)

I know what you meant...but it was fairly offensive the way you responded.

P.S. You don't really have to respond to my previous request if you know what I was getting at.

Congrats on the new bike, lets see some pix of it dirty now :-) It came down to these two brands for me too and it was close because they're both awesome bikes... but I went good. Admittedly, I may have been swayed by my past experience with spesh bikes, maybe I should of gone for a change hmmmm... time for another bike?

    Well, just to update...

Been riding almost everyday and some of my comments:

    - overall, the R2 is an excellent bike.
    - only thing I didnt really like is the brakes. the Juicy 3 is so-so.
    - the shifting seems a lot smoother after the 50Km break-in period
    - the tires are pretty decent but not spectacular
    - front forks are awesome so as the rear shocks as long as its properly dialed in
    - definitely need to change the Sram X7 rear deraileur to maybe the X9 or X0.
    - paint job on the frame is amazing. This thing looks sexy as hell especially when
    splattered with mud and dirt.

    Later.

Maybe upgrade the shifters and cables, instead, if you feel shifting is not that great?

(with some older gear, I feel SRAM shifting is "slam" positive, rather than "swish" smooth like Shimano)

First thing you have to do is take it back in the house and do a proper couch shot. . . . on the couch this time, not leaning against it

    Don't half-ass the couch shot

    Nice rig.

    Hey folks,

The Evil one is calling for some change...

-it wants a bash guard and chain guide.
-it wants front derailleurs and tubeless tires.

    any suggestions??

    :P

Gamut seems to be the hot name in chain guides now. Not saying there's anything wrong with the rest. Those ISCG mounted half bashes (what do you call them?) might not be the greatest after all, if you might actually bash into something.

A front derailer is a front derailer, as long as it has the pivots in the right place, so it fits and works with your cable runs.

Tires depend on where and how you ride.

Any chance you could elaborate on this felix (or anyone else for that matter)? I've been trying to ask a question on this site about suspension setups/options and this might be one of those comments I've been trying to get. Sorry if this is a hijack.
