1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

    Anyone else in China?

Are any members of this great forum in China? I would love to discuss mountain biking in this country!

You're in China? Way to represent from all the way out there! What's the recreational mountain biking scene like out there? I imagine bikes are seen more as transportation than for fun, though I remember seeing some videos where people were starting to introduce fixies to the city.

There is a growing number of mountain biking enthusiasts here, both foreign and local. I am just a n00b though haha. And millions use bikes or e bikes for transportation!

No, I am not in China, but I'd like to visit your mountains with my boots and my bike.

That's very cool. Did the 2008 Olympic mountain bike event in China cause a lot of new interest in the sport?

Can I ask if you're an expat there? (you don't have to answer that if you don't want to).
