Are the Port Hills Trails OK?

A mate and I are heading to the South Island in a couple of weeks and we are curious to know the extent of the damage to trails in the Port Hills area.

Would we be wise to not consider riding in that area?

The media coverage looks pretty extensive but I thought I would ask the question.

We are heading across Arthurs Pass and then up to Nelson for 2 weeks of riding so if Christchurch is simply out of the question then its no biggy.

    Thanks.

Sumner is cutoff, summit road and evans pass are littered with boulders. Several walkers were killed on the PH trails on tuesday. Sounds like a great place for a ride.

It was probably a silly question to ask but I was just as curious to know the extent of damage to that area whether it was safe or not.

Thanks for the heads up, I guess we will give that location a miss on this trip and concentrate on heading North to Nelson.

Hope things improve in the mean time.

    Thanks.

Assuming these are Port Hills trails, this page seems to indicate they were OK as of the 26th:

be prepared for more climbing though ... after the big shake the port hills are now about 3ft higher ...

watch out for boulders if you do go riding there though, both on the track already and those dislodged by further shakes ...

On the bright side, that means there's a wicked 3ft drop somewhere to session.
