Mini road trip - north east Vic

On tuesday I decided I wasn't going to fritter away my week off so early Wednesday I hurriedly packed the car and set off. I was planning to stay with my cousin in Albury and do some riding from there. I dropped into Buxton on my way. All was good until I found I had left my pump at home in my rush to leave. (As well as my toothbrush and phone charger, as I would later discover...)

But Buxton is not technical, mainly smooth dirt, what could go wrong?

I was at the furthest point from the car climbing hard on the SS and my chain slipped off, sending me OTB. I banged my knee up and tore a muscle under my armpit. But much worse, as the bike folded over the front tyre burped - leaving it with about 5psi

So...I started walking and after about 200m heard voices ahead, saved!
But no it was the trail builders with their excavator having a break. No pump there, but they advised me to follow 'that trail' which would lead back to the carpark. But no, it was the new loop track, so after half an hour of hike-a-bike I ended up literally metres from where I flatted! So it was back tracking all the way back I had originally ridden, about 1.5 hrs of pushing in the blazing sun.

    Great start to my trip...

The following day 3 of us went out to Beechworth. First we were going to go and check out 'Flame Trees' an out-and-back section of singletrack that runs parralell to the railtrail, within the rail trail reserve. We parked at the station and rode out about 5 or 6km towards Everton, then there was about 4.5km of singletrack on one side and another 4.5km on the return. Eventually there is going to be about 20km each side.
The trails are rated 'easy' and they are pretty fun, also a good place to take a beginner along to give them a taste of mtb.

After lunch we rode out to the Beechworth MTB park. Great fun! We also did the new/re-opened link trail from town to the park around the edge of the golf course. There we met Paul Fitzgerald and did a lap of the xc loop with him. Great techy trails.

The following day it was out to Bright. Bright was the highlight for me.
First we followed some singletrack beside the river out to Wandiligong. On the way back there is another singletrack on the other side of the river. Great flowy twisty trails with lots of sharp dips and turns. Really fun but not phyically taxing. We popped out near the pine forest and bumped into another rider who took as on a loop through the pines. There is so much in there to explore, we barely scratched the surface. After that we continued on the riverside trail at one point being taken on an extra section by the Rockstar racing crew who were out training. Friendly bunch.
The return leg also took us pass a crit track of about 1km in length, that was good fun too.

We went to Porepunkah for lunch then parted ways to go home. I headed to Mansfield via Dandongadale and Whitfield which was much more interesting than via the Hume, though there was about 25 km of gravel. I couldn't resist dropping in at the Manfield mtb park. Love this spot. Very aussie scrub and the singletrack is all narrow hand cut stuff. Only about 8km but it winds up to the top of the hill behind town giving good views and then a fun descent. I was terrified because my inbuilt snake-o-metre was off the scale but the rustlings were apparently all lizards...

The sign at the trailhead and signage along the way are appropriately rustic, but you can't get lost or make a wrong turn.

It was very hot and dry up there and there wasn't a soul to be seen, but it was great.

Just search for Riflebutts road, Mansfield and the trailhead is about 100m on the right after the road turns to gravel or ride through the big concrete pipe if you are riding from town.

    Dusty Pug.

As I was packing up the car I could hear a fuss over beside a big gum tree and it was this 'rigger' beetle clinging to a wild oat, trying in vain with beetle-like persistance to get itself out of trouble, not understanding its efforts were useless.

    Good times.

Nice write up Hud. There are also some really good quiet spots around Yackandandah that offer I little more for the techically inclined.... like me. Plus some great Myrtleford spots, but they are a secret

Nice one Hud, one of the best places in Australia to do a road trip, some great trails and you didnt even do Mt Beauty. I must have taken a wong turn in Bright because I didn't have a great time there. That just means I have to go back .

I know that road near Whitfield, its a good one!!

I ran out of time for Mt Beauty, but bearing in mind that there is so much up there as well, its a great place to spend a few days.

Good trip Hud, nice write up. I'd never even heard of the Rifle Butts mtb park...have to have look in one day.

    Nine days to go?

Rowdy Flat for example? (just btw - that's what I call a snake-trap)

There's some pics here, to help bring back the memories...What did we all ride on the weekend?

I'm keen for that too, but my weekends in early in feb are pretty out due to work, but hopefully not too long after that we can get together.
