Who wants to ride this Sunday? A little exploration & adventure on the AZT.

Anyone want to join me on an exploratory type ride this Sunday? 52 mile loop starting/ending in Sunflower just off AZ87. Bunch of jeep roads/forest roads/AZT passage 21 (Pine Mountain passage). The route will take us over near Roosevelt Lake, then up El Oso rd (backside of four peaks) to the AZT. We'll do a brief OnB to the Wilderness boundary then take the AZT, mostly downhill, back to the car. Trail conditions: unknown, oooohh, I smell adventure! Any takers? I'd like to start riding around 7am.

I plan on taking a fair amount of pics so there will be plenty of opportunities for stopping. Relaxed pace.

Hopefully the GPX files attached correctly.

Tempting, John, but I'm checking out the northern end of BCT tomorrow (finally!). Look forward to your report!

I might be up for this. I've been wanting to do some exploring back in there for a long time. How long do you predict this to take. Only reason that I even care is for kitchen pass negotiations.

EZ: That's a good question, 8-9 hours??? The last 8 miles is singletrack or trail, whatever you want to call it and almost all downhill. Who knows what kind of conditions we'll run into there. The rest of the route is forest/jeep roads, so I'd think we would make decent time on those even with the climb up El Oso rd.

For anyone interested in coming along, plan on riding at 7am from Sunflower. See the GPX file, but it appears there is a pulloff suitable for parking very close to the start of the loop.

52 miles and (i estimate) 6500 feet of climbing.. man, I am just not there yet. Wouldn't this be on par with the PPP 50 ?

Perhaps, but the PPP50 will have more trail less dirt road.

Wow, looks like there is a water stop in punkin center / tonto basin, I just noticed that. Less water to carry... It would have been tempting if I didn't do my big ride today...

Well, that was an interesting loop. Would I do it again? Yes, but perhaps after some trail clearing on the final 8 miles. Holy catclaw!! It didn't help that the last 5 miles were HAB in the dark, yeah, we ran out of daylight. Had some cramping issues with one of the fellas and that cost us precious time. Full RR coming, but here are a few pics:

    Had some HAB early on.

Then some killer views on the long descent down from Reno Pass into the Tonto Basin.

Good old fashioned climbing up El Oso. Ezshum mashing the SS!!

Topped off some water near the summit.

Quick OnB to the Wilderness boundary.

Some more FR's across the ridge.

Onto the singletrack of the AZT

Racing daylight on a vague overgrown trail....reaching the car at 10pm!!
