Unknown on a $200 Walmart fat Bike Beats tons of Pros at Sea Otter - Very cool story!

This is movie story kind of stuff. Awesome!

Fat Bike Slays Sea Otter Classic

Beastley informed us that hed just departed a harsh winter in his native land, the Yukon Territory. Hed hopped a series of freight trains to complete the 3,100-mile journey. His $200 fat bike was fresh off a Walmart showroom floor. We collectively let out some nervous laughter, unsure whether this wild-eyed gentleman was delusional or some kind of offbeat comedian. The laughter immediately ceased the moment we saw Beastley ride.

    Cool story.
For $200, I might just pick one of these up for trips south of the border.

Is this story from the ONION?

"Beastley" riding a fat bike from Walmart, beating out the PROS?

    That is just too funny.

You mean that desire is what separates the pros from the Joes and not having the sickest gear?

Damn, yet again, I've been doing it wrong....

I was thinking the same thing, but want it to be true.

It appears you can get a Mongoose Fatty for $199 from Walmart though. I am tempted to just go buy one to ride with the wife and kids. I have been trying to figure out a way to handicap. Get a better work out at a kids pace.

It never said he took a podium, just that he beat some pros.

Lawl. Take off coaster brake, mount some discs, add a better styled stem and headset, and this would be sweet.

The look on the "racer" guy's face as he gets passed by the walmart junker is priceless. Here he is on his 20 Lb carbon frame in his brand new DNA get out and the dude with jean shorts and t-shirt is passing him with a cheapo bike.

This is pure comedy material, get Will Ferrell to play the role of MANUEL BEASTLEY....the script is already written
Hed hopped a series of freight trains to complete the 3,100-mile journey

the only way to make this funnier would if the guy had beer belly and a Molson in the bottle cage...

You all know that was Adam Craig, world singlespeed champ and world cup racer and Enduro racer extraordinaire right for at least some of the racing, certainly the XC stuff!

I think the bikes are only available via online walmart. They were sold out for a time. Check out the thread in the fat bike forum for things people have learned and done to them.

I call B.S on this whole thing. Is Walmart now selling this bike for $200? Seems Sea Otter has a big laugh on everyone believing everything they read on-line.

I've not been to Sea Otter. All the trails I've seen pictures of are of the none technical kind. Now I'm no pro rider by any stretch, but I'd bet i'd break that bike in short order on the trails I ride here in AZ. I doubt it would make one trip down National with out something breaking.

If anyone's gonna break a bike, it would be a world class pro who makes his living beating up bikes...and he didn't. Maybe the bike isn't so bad afterall.

What I don't understand is why Bike Magazine promotes Walmart to this extent. If Walmart have paid them to do this story there should be some sort of disclaimer, or at least a note that the whole story is advertising.

I don't think it was an advertising story. I think it was just another wacky thing for Adam Craig to do, rather than actually try and win some races. I'm sure the people that do pay him to ride, were pissed off about seeing that. The reason it got so much media coverage is due to it being an interesting story, not because Walmart is paying them.

Your buddy tells you he wants a bike. What's the first thing you say? Probably "Don't go to fuarking Walmart." Walmart bikes have pariah status in the cycling community and toting it as a "Walmart bike" just reinforces that the guy did some crazy stuff on a junk tier bike and the bike wound up living through it.

The fact that Walmart got a free nod out of it is probably just icing on the cake.

Guys, it just goes to prove how important the rider is. You can take a really good rider and put him ona "gag" bike and he will still destroy most average riders.

When you are searching for seconds bike makes a difference. If you are looking for minutes it is all rider.

This clearly illustrates that riding skills are FAR, FAR more important than having a nice bike

which is good for my cause lol.
