    Thankgiving in Mesa...gotta ride!

All right, all you fine, upstanding people, I will be in Mesa at my in-laws for Thanksgiving this year. I arrive Tuesday afternoon, and leave Saturday afternoon. I am looking for some rides. I will certainly hit Hawes. I have yet to do SoMo, and would love to have some company for that. I'm also looking into another ride, so please PM me because I'm looking For Others That Participate (that'd be FOTP for short. Subtle? No?)

I had some fine company from the mtbr community two years ago. Last year was supposed to be Thanksgiving at my folks, but I broke my pelvis the hour before our scheduled departure. Hence, National by myself will likely be frowned upon by my loving and supportive wife.

K-trail is loads of fun. It's in a beautiful patch of desert and offers a variety of terrain. You'll enjoy it.

It is now obvious that I need nail down my schedule due to the kindness of y'all! Sugarhigh, Bighorn Lew, I will be contacting you both shortly.

Of course, if anyone finds themselves in my neck of the woods (San Diego), I'd be happy to give the local view of things.

Planning Hawse on Wednesday 11/21 at 3:00 stage from my place (PM for address). We will ride for about two hours with little to no stops at a decent pace. Will do Twisted Sister, maybe a bit of Wild Horse. Maybe climb to the water tower and do Hawse Trail. Others are welcome to come.

Lew and Douger, You want to ride K-Trail at 7:00 am on Friday? Ride for 2 hours or so? I can pick you up on the way Doug. Might be hung over though.

If I didnt ride hung over I would have missed about 50% of my weekend rides. All sounds good.

    Geof:

Transition Senior and I love to ride the Gold Canyon location. Sounds like other posters enjoy riding K Trail and Tech Loop along with Gila Monster and Snowbird mixed in with Horse Trail and Vortex. The new Old Man's Drop on Gila Monster is pretty cool. If we can get a group together while you are here it would be fun to ride with you and other interested riders. Wives are certainly welcome Pick a day that works best for you.

If you decide to ride with TS remember he is 68 and needs to take a lot of breaks when he rides. He likes to think he is in his early 30's but life has taken its toll on him. Please be gentle.

You can't fool me. 68 is simply 25 more years of training than a 43 year old. My dad is 76. He'll out-climb most folks.

Sometimes I think factors like weight, muscle mass, body fat %, experience, etc... are a lot more significant than how many years you have been alive... Age really is just a number...

I think its because older folks are more likely to have less muscle mass and be overweight... so we tend to associate older with weaker and worse shape... But just because you are old doesnt mean you have to be out of shape...

I can certainly clear more sections now then when I was in my 20's... I am 44...

    Okay, here's my plan:

I'll be doing some of National early on Thanksgiving day with freeskier46. I would be happy to do K trail(plus whatever) on Friday early with BHLew and others. Trying to find a meeting place. Wednesday afternoon I will be at Hawes with Sugarhigh. Saturday will likely be pure family time, which will include some time at McPump.

All of this is subject to familial intercession. I am really looking forward to enjoying all y'all's home turf!

Isnt that the truth. Thats my biggest concern. With the twins teething these days it doesnt take much to tip the balance to a quick ride veto.

Douger, here's your plan: agree to get up EVERY TIME for the two nights prior. You will win your wife's heart all over again!

FOTP 2014 is on my list.

BHLew, I fully approve of Job 1. heck, I make that my job 1 even in races! I will meet you as proposed at the proposed hour in the proposed location. I am practicing the secret handshake now.

    Geoff:

Some of the secret handshake group will not be making it to the 7AM ride. We will be starting the second secret handshake ride at 10:30 AM or something close to that time. Maybe we will cross paths during the ride to say hi If others want to join in on a later start let us know.

Nope just too old to start at 7:00 AM. I really hope we run into you guys out there when you are finishing up. Maybe we can share phone numbers and meet somewhere you will be riding on your return to the parking lot.

Hopefully GM is riding with you, that guy really knows those trails well. I understand K of K trail no longer goes out there. That my friend is a fun trail

I'm thinking of taking a 'Thanksgiving' ride out at GC to do the newly completed SNOWBIRD loop; and also take in SECRET, and TECH; at 10AM. Meet at Cloudview; Black Friday.
There also will be some/all of the GILA extension to K to ride for those able to do so.

Technically, all names are made up.

But yes, I just pulled those out of thin air while I was typing. And, yes, they do remind me of Sedona names as well.

    BL:

We talked some Sedona riders into coming down and do a pre- Thanksgiving Gold Canyon ride tomorrow. We are going to probably do the same ride as you are proposing but will probably throw in Diamond Back after Gila Monster. Thanks for the ride suggestion. If you get a chance try to hook in Snowbird, I think it might be in an upcoming map update.

If anyone wants to check out Something Different we would love to have some younger riders along for the ride. The ride will probably start around 12:01 PM.

The cloudview lot is official parking for the lost goldmine, and hieroglyphic trails. Might be easier if we all meet at the walgreens on the northeast corner of US 60 and Kings Ranch road in gold canyon at 7am. Lets do that! We will drive the rest of the way from there.

    BL:

TS and I went out to Gold Canyon to ride Diamond Back. We rode Lost Gold Mine to try out Cougar which I haven't ridden previously. About 150 yards before intersecting the Parking Lot trail we came to an intersection to our left called 2GM the intersection is slightly before the second to last wash crossing before reaching the Parking Lot trail.

We rode 2GM to a jeep road that we crossed to continue on 2GM to Gila Monster where we turned left and rode to the wood bridge. After crossing the bridge you can drop down a VERY STEEP solid rock section onto the Short Cut trail which takes you back to Gila Monster where you end up on a Jeep Road.

From there we crossed the road and rode Diamond Back out to K-Trail. When you start Diamond Back you need to be aware that there are two lines within the first 100 yards of the start (Jeep Road). I tried both lines and did not make the straight line which climbs a very steep solid piece of rock. About 30 yards back from the steep rock climb there is an alternate trail that bypasses the steep rock climb and is totally rideable. From that point Diamond Back flows like butter to K-Trail.

From there you can ride K-Trail to Super Secret to Kikki to the Horse trail where a sign says Snowbird with an arrow pointing east (left). You take the Horse trail going east where the bike tracks veer left and takes to a twisty challenging climb to the top of Snowbird Mountain. At the top you have a great view of the surrounding area.

After doing a short break we rode down the southwest side back to Kikki and back to Secret from there you can take a number of ways back to the Cloudview parking lot.

Two down, one to go. I've greatly enjoyed my riding so far! I took a small vertical detour and scraped up my knees coming down National, so I'm glad tomorrow is flowy fun. I'm also thankful I had elbow/forearm protection this morning.

Nice to meet/ride with you for a bit y'day Geoffrey. Sounds like you were 'officially' initiated into National Trail on the descent!! That trail has a way of doing that to people. I made it back to my car at 4:18p, just under 10 hours, pretty stoked about that. Here are a few snaps from the day:

Well, I had a fantastic time! Big thanks to my tour guides on all three rides! Freeskier46, I went over the bars on a medium size step, and bruised a rib and both knees. Great job being done so early, even with an "extra-friednly" early pace. BHLew, I hope you enjoyed the rest of your ride. I actually started bonking, but had an emergency Snickers. SH and Douger,I had a great time on Twisted Sister and Wild Horse.

    I would call this mostly-good-sore.

If you find yourselves out in San Diego, let me know. Thanks againfor some more items to add to my ever-lengthening list of things to be thankful for!
