    Stepdown + Wind = Cuckoo

So this last weekend my buddy Al and I headed to Papago to expand on our experience hitting bigger things after last weekend at NRA. Al arrived about 45 mins before me and with his wife and camera in tow decided to hit the big step down prior to my arrival. He apparently cased it on his first attempt and came back with a fearless speedier attempt... it was around 11 and the wind was kickin up a bit and the pics tell the story. In the 3rd pic you can see his hips have turned as I think the front of his bike is pushing to the left. Probably having kind of baggie pants to catch the wind didn't help matters. Anyway he walked away after laying down for several minutes more than once. Had a dinger on his right upper eye socket area next to his temple, a very sore shoulder, some nice forearm roadrash, and a very black and blue toe. Oh and a trashed pair of sunglasses

Edit- I said expand on "our" experience and I need to mention that "we" did not expand on "our" experience... "I" quickly loaded my bike back in the truck and headed to SOMO for some action closer to the ground

Yeah that's his dog Chili, there was a pic of Chili lickin his face that was pretty good. His wife was holdin' the camera and she apologized for taking her finger off the shutter button when she saw he was crashin'... Now that's a true freeriders wife!! She did have the sense to get a couple shots of him laid out on the ground though

Papago is no fun with the wind whipping. It always seems to be just the wrong direction. I'm happier at NRA even if the drive is twice as far. Those drops kinda wore me down over the years we played out there...

Last time I was out there, it looked like there were a lot of steep lipped BMX-style jumps. That stepdown leads into a double if I remember correctly.
Also, there is another smaller step down next to it, but its not a gapper.

I haven't been out there in awhile though, its always changing.

Evan and I were thinking about building it up again. There's the step down, a couple of doubles, and some smaller drops, but that's about it. The old school lines are pretty washed out.

Yeah, place has potential, just needs some diggers. Its always fun climbing on the ridge and seeing the giraffes at the zoo too

It's not as far as NRA... unless you live out there. But it's not nearly as big an area either, or as well maintained. There's a few other gnar features there, some drops, and lots of jumps that are in disrepair. But more just single hit stuff, not really enough room for long multi-hit lines like NRA. It's also pretty gravelly. I heard people have gotten fines for building there before too. But I'd be stoked to see Papago get cleaned up and ridden more .

You can get fined for digging but I've never had a problem. Of course I tried to be discrete too. The other drag with building out there is the amount of non-jumper traffic that it gets. Some people just love to ride over the jumps and flatten the lips. Not much you can do but fume about it and start over. Oh yeah, if you go out there watch out for the bees in the stepdown to the left of that gap. They've been there for years.

I love papsmear for a little evening session. Good rock line down one side. Fun little rh hipper. Some easy dubs, fun step ups. Gnar and not so gnar drops. Once you spend some time out there you can find some fun stuff to hit. A little massaging would help greatly, but I always forget my shovel when I go because I left it at NRA. Plus pap's right down the road from kore bikes and the GREEN restaurant...mmm crispy tofu

nice sequence. Bummer wreck. So if I live in QC and ride at NRA all the time, is it worth it to check this place out?

Paps has my number. I like the jumps but seem to crash fairly often there, and every time I crash it ends up hurting REAL bad. Last time was 18 stitches to the leg, before that was a broken helmet and a concussion. It's weird, I never have that problem anywhere else???

Big cajones going for that. I do miss Pap. Used to live 10 min ride from there.

RUPGUTS I would say it's worth checking out just to vary your riding. It is mostly one hit at a time but you can keep going over it till you get it dialed.

Anyone hit the "diving board" at the top of the hill opposite of most of the jumps?

The diving board is kinda hard to do anymore. There's a new building with a fence around it that's right in the way. You'd only have a few feet to get up to speed. Blecch!

Wow! A post about the paps! That place is my spot, my cousin and I are slowly but surely revampin it, but we get so discouraged when people walk all over the jumps ride up them then stumble akwardly back down, piercing holes ad they do it.
