The snakes are out! [post yer rattler photos here!]

Is it just me, or is there an abundance of snakes this year. Tonight as I was finishing up my ride at the white tanks I was coming around a corner and saw this guy all streched out.

I dont know who was more surprised, me or him. I went back to snap a few more pics and he let me know quick to stay away.

I love that about AZ: around every corner, in every gully, under every rock there could be agonizing pain, skin necrosis and possible cardiac arrest, yet we continue on knowing that the chances of the snake getting kicked up by the person in front of us, flying through the air and landing around our neck, Inspector Clouseau style, is got to be less getting hit be a meteorite while riding.

At least it wasn't a mojave rattler. Heard those are quite lethal. Only seen one once. Terrified me.

Nice find. Any more pics of it ? Lots of snakes out this year. Good monsoon seasons ensure lots of snake movement.

my photo from a coupla years ago at Fantasy Island early one morning. I crashed avoiding it but it was near dormant as it was a cool morning. Still scared the jeepers out of me and I walk through the shrubs to avoid it which in hindsight wasn't too smart either.

Wish I had a pic but I saw an AZ Black Rattlesnake while camping on the Mogollon Rim this weekend. It was pretty much all black except for yellow stripes on its back...beautiful. First time I've come across one of these guys so it was cool.

Those little snakes won;t be close to the trail head or beer cooler. You will be fine.

    'Monday Munch'

    Hi,

This is a series from my 'home trail' of Chong, one of our resident Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes, (Crotalus atrox). I was stalking one of his favorite hunting spots and watched him have a tasty breakfast. Sorry about the framing, no cropping, he was just too close!

    Photographed Monday, August 16, 2010 @ WowAz.com

First grasp after the neck strike…

The snakes are out! [post yer rattler photos here!]-img_9856.jpg

…his jaw dislocated, Chong gets the young Gambel's Quail (Callipepla gambelii) in position for the big swallow.

    …a mere twelve minutes later…

The snakes are out! [post yer rattler photos here!]-img_9871.jpg

…the prey is passed completely through the mouth, jaw relocated and a deep breath…

The snakes are out! [post yer rattler photos here!]-img_9938.jpg

…some fang repositioning, and stretching, Chong does the after-breakfast yawn, after eating an adolescent Gambel's Quail.

I did not even notice he was a Mojave!! After I shot the pic, I just approached him from his tail side with the bike between me and him. He got a little pissed, rattled his tail and slithered off the trail into a bush.

Man, you bastard are getting in my head. I went out last night for my first ride with the MagicShine. Started before the sun set but was riding like a pansy looking for these things coming out as the evening cools. Didn't happen...

Whitetaco's is a Mojave also, with a cool little aberrant pattern midway down it's back.

I was inches from putting my foot down on this guy. West side of Trail 620 at SoMo. Funny thing is he didn't budge. It was early and still cool out but I made all sorts of racket jumping over and clearing out! I came back to snap this picture. Hard to spot given their natural camaflouge. I ran across a Gila Monster in the middle of the trail at Estrella last year, wish I could have taken a picture. Seen a thousand snakes but thats the only one of those I have ever seen.
