Scratch Sunflower: Lets do Prescott Monstercross Bikepack Oct 27&28

Since several areas were closed we're going to change and make it a Prescott two day event. Mild easy riding but 8k of climbing over two days. Pretty sure we'll have plenty of time for extra excursions and exploration.

Borrowed a strava for those that want to see it.
Mountain Bike Ride Profile | 2012 Prescott Monstercross near Prescott | Times and Records | Strava

GPX files are also available from the AES series website (gotta throw in thanks to Scott of Topofusion for that)
4 Prescott Monstercross | Arizona Endurance Series

Ill update as it goes but so far it seems we will meet at Costco and head out from there. Several people are carpooling and Ill update with a list of who has room. (Please be kind to those doing the driving and help share the $$ for gas) Some will be heading up Friday; others on Saturday. Please post up if you have room available and a list of who all will be in your carpool.

    Meet: Costco @ 5am
Milage: 60 (30ish each day plus whatever riding is done for exploring)
    Elevation gain: 8kish

Riding though the Dell's with a fully loaded bikepack kit will be interesting! Other than that I think the PMC would make a perfect beginner bikepack loop. easy water access, and always a bailout to town.

Sounds fun, but can't make it that day.

    I'm totally stoked, bro.

I'm thinking about heading up on Friday. Lynx Lake is right by that Costco and they got a campground. It's $18 a night. I definitely think Lynx would be the best if you want to camp the night before.

I drive a Ranger and if somebody wants to ride up with me, I'm cool.

Hey, I'm thinking about doing a shake down run maybe next weekend. Anybody else interested? Flagstaff to Mormon Lake and back, or maybe Sedona to Flagstaff, something like that.

    Heard that.

What's the water situation along the route? Reliable creeks, horse tanks, etc to resupply?

From what I've read it seems pretty good. I'm still taking my pump/filter. Hopefully someone else that knows for sure will chime in.

There's reliable water on route. Just after exiting the Dells you'll be on a bike path by the lake, there's restrooms & water there about 9 miles or so into the route. There's water at Granite Basin Lake, just after crossing the road there's a pump a few feet off the trail (about mile 20). Then at mile 40, there's White Spar Campground, more restrooms/water available there.

As for a shakedown BP'ing ride, can't say I'd recommend the Flag to Mormon Lake route, especially if you're talking about the AZT. Post-holed from cattle & littered with softball sized rocks for about 8 miles. Just did that section on Day4 of the Coco250 & it was probably my worst experience of the route.

The Mogollon rim may be something worth checking out for a shakedown ride. Start near AZ87 & FR300, ride the rim road east to the Cabin Loops, head out onto said Loops, campout. Then ride back the next day. Cabin Loops are great & even FR300 provides for some excellent views. I have some beta posted on my blog if you're interested.

    Have fun out there!!

Nice. Probably the only thing I'll be able to strap on my bike is my tent, and even that might be a push. Rest of it will have to go on my back. Oh well.

Who is planning on camping at Lynx on Friday?

I don't want to sound like a whiny bit*h, I mean, I am, but that's not the point.

Anyway, about this 5Am thing, can we maybe push it up to seven or so? I mean sunrise isn't until 6:45 anymore. What are we gonna do for two hours in the dark? Be derelicts in the parking lot and tell dirty jokes or stand around and hear me complain about how cold it is?

I have done a test ride with my equipment mounted to the bike but then I had to rearrange everything so in the morning I will test it out again and see how it she rides. Are you guys bringing bike lights? I was just planning on bringing a head lamp for camp but if we plan on riding early I may need to pack one. I am planning on driving up with owtdorz so I will be camping on Friday. Hope I have room for beer!

I'll probably be the advance party and leave town about noon or so. Be nice to take my fishing kit and maybe see if anything is still active up there. If the fishing sucks, might do a little light spinning on some of the trails around the lake. Or both.

You guys gonna bring any firewood with you? I was gonna get a bundle or two of that crap they sell at QT.

I'll send both you guys my number. Lynx is pretty close to Prescott, so I doubt there would be a signal problem. Just gimme a call when you're getting close.

I'm not going to have time to do a proper shake down run either. Best I'll be able to do is a long T100 run just to see how everything rides. Shameful.

    Here's my ride report:

If you showed up, you're a real man, and a tough one at that.

If you puss*ed out, you're a complete vag.

    The end.
