Tear it up, Timmy, like you did last year w/ Henry! Watch out for the gravel going down Sunrise, I hear it can be deceiving! :-)

I'd suggest either Jan 18th or Feb 1st...Jan 25th is the AES Gila100/APC65 race.
There is still the issue of Hidden Hills.

    WOW, Ray!!!

Still here and still riding, though not as much due to a lot of travel and more running than riding recently (tweaked Achilles notwithstanding).

I'm on the fence re the Quad this year for two reasons:
    1. Hidden Hills access issue (though I don't particularly care), but more importantly,
    2. McDowell Sonoran Preserve "permission/approval" concerns. Last year, they staked out the Basha's parking lot on the Saturday it was scheduled for (rain pushed it to Sun), then tracked me down on Sunday at the Sunrise TH. They had been tracking this thread (last year's), and were concerned. They wanted me to contact them for approval or something ahead of this year's Quad, which kind of turned me off.

So I'm still mulling it over...I'll let you know ASAP.

Thats lame of them... Hey Preserve peeps. If you are going to lurk this thread please post up the reason for needing to gain permission for a group of friends to ride your trails?

It's not a race or any kind of sanctioned event, it's a group of people on a social ride.. the type of rides your organization should be promoting.

Right now, for me, lifting > running > riding...all of which is < football season!! And, of course, keeping Mrs. Waltaz happy...!

    Go Pats!

Lifting has made me such a better rider. Love it.

I was wondering if you guys were still around. Never rode with y'all, but was hoping to one day.

tell them to suck a phat dick. Cite a law and show up with a sheriff, or go **** themselves. don't back out because of this BS. If you don't want to be 'the guy' create a sock puppet account, or hell I'll 'organize' it I probably won't even ride it. I would like nothing better than to start some shit about this. The Preserve was bought and paid for by taxes from citizens, bunch of power-hungry posers who think they 'own' the mountains seeing nothing wrong with taking away people's freedom.

So, if so, we'll do it on Jan. 18th, per Ray's feedback above...

Access thru the development to the trails is restricted. So, you either have to get somebody to let you thru the gate OR do a long damn ride around to another access point.

Definitely not an issue for a solo riders but might be for a group. One of the residents calls the cops after seeing several MTBers pass by, the back of the bus group then has to deal with law.

I am not sure if this Hidden Hill bypass would work.
There is a trail that leads east from Via Linda (the street next to the Sunrise TH) to Cloud Crest Trail. That street leads to Eagle Ridge Dr. (turn left) all the way to the end. There is a small gate at the end with NO TRESPASSING sign but there is a trail around the side. The dirt road connects back to the quad bypass route.

I rode through Hidden Hills Tuesday going to and from Scottsdale. The gates at the north end (dirt road into the preserve) remain offset in the center. At the south end near the Sunrise Trailhead there is a man gate at the sidewalk area that has been unlocked every time I have ridden through so physical access is not the issue. The real (or perceived) issue is the signs posted at each end regarding the restricted access and trespassing.

I totally agree with Bart. It appears that dirt path is clear. My parents live in Fountain Hills. I can scout that connector next time I am there.

    Nicely illustrated.

I just want to add that there is an underpass just below the Hidden Hills gate. I think it was designed for the horses. It extends from the Sunrise TH, goes under Via Linda, then there is a tiny trail that crosses the wash and connects to the clearly visible trail on the above google map. If you zoom in on google maps you can see it.

Well, thanks for all the feedback, and thanks Walt for work'in on this. Getting trail access for Mt. Bikers can be tough. We are at the mercy of others sometimes. If you need some help organizing let me know.

    My 3 cents

While it is physically easy to go through (dis)Harmony Hills, those people seriously have their knickers in a twist over cyclists. That situation could easily turn ugly. That's why the AES "ride" did not go through there this year.

There is a go-around, but it blows. However, might be worth it to do the Quad if there is a big group. You can take the horse path down to the wash and through that to a crummy dirt road. That'll take you into another gated community that doesn't yet hate cyclists.

As for notifying the preserve about the ride. Walt told me about that last year, but I more or less forgot this year and the AES ride went off without drama. That was 40ish people. I'm guessing this is more of a courtesy thing. At the end of the day, who is going to say that people can't ride just because they all happened to show up at the same time?

Scottsdale is planning a new trail from Sunrise to Ftn Hills "early in 2014". I don't expect it to be done for this year's quad, but should be an option for next year. That should allow us to avoid the elitist jerks in HH for the future.

I was hoping to participate i the quad this year. If it doesn't come off as a formal thing, I'll do it informally with a few friends. The route is available year round...

Hey all...I'm not gonna do a formal Quad this year, for a variety of reasons. If anyone wants to pick up the mantle, go for it!

Hope to see you out on the trails, and have a Happy New Year!!

I'm actually thinking of doing a variation of the Quad. Maybe an out & back to Sunrise Vs doing the loop. Or just stay in the Gateway area and do some variation with TT thrown in instead of Sunrise. Windgate/Bell/Windgate (*via the cutover near the Paradise intersection)/East End to TT/back to the car.

If you dont mind some hab, the Northern Quad Bypass of Awesomesauce. Bell (up)->down Bell to East End (up)->TT down->Windgate up and over->Bell down to Paradise to Quartz to the jump pit (yes, there are some nice jumps I've been hitting) back to start. Less time, fewer hikers, all up and down no flats.

I could be down with that route. My version has the same HAB bits anyway (East End up is just ridiculous!)
