    Photo Friday 8/31/12

Checking in from Tucson. Hope i didn't start a second PF but didn't see one.

Post em if you got em.

BOOM! First up XXX rated snake action in Yetman wash. And those snakes weren't the only ones to leave that wash with a smile. Bert was grinning from ear to ear.

Carbonboy was grinning to but for a different reason on Lemmon.

    Then Mr. Serious.

He was more afraid that this worm from Tremors was gonna jump off him onto his bike and crack it.

    Token Bird Shot!
    Grasshopper Sparrow eating a Grasshopper.

If you wanna see the rest of the pics just go here and pay me $100 bucks.

This is where I was hanging out on Friday...

Storms moving in at Cape Royal:

The sun setting over the North Rim lodge:

    And the Blue Moon rising:

Night shooting on Thursday with my new Canon 5D Mark III and a Rokinon 14mm lens - what a show!

    And a sunrise:

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is a magical place.

Thanks! The Mark III freaking amazing, and the L lens is pretty nice too but I also got great results with my cheapo Rokinon 14mm. The new camera is really too big to bring biking, so the T3i will continue to be my "beater" camera. But for on-site photography, even for hiking... this 5D is an absolute dream. These shots did not just happen, of course. It took careful plotting and planning, and most were done from a tripod with a remote trigger. But what you see is almost exactly what the camera produced on-site. I did very little post-processing. I cannot think of a better 50th birthday gift to myself (and thanks to my Dad for chipping in on this joint purchase)!!

    Happy Brits

I was up on Thunder Mtn trail with these two visiting riders from the UK. They were beside themselves. Never had ever seen anything like this in their lives. In a couple of days we will be riding in Flag and Sedona. Riders are welcome to join in on the riding.

The IB Trail/Pick up sticks might be my favorite Flag Trail (2nd & 3rd pic). I don't know if it is because it is simply stunning or because it is work to get there but if you ever find yourself on it, you are in for a treat! I only wish it was longer. It always leaves me with a smile and wanting more...

How about rather than just getting on the Equestrian Bypass after the pass, just head up Sunset then down Little Bear to pick it up? Nothing like adding another 1500ft to a 10k ft day! I'd be happy doing the second loop and end with LB for starters. Then to end the ride, it's LB, Bypass to Shultz. Sweet. I'm still eyeing the 29th.

Yup, that's what I was thinking. If we do the 88, start @Sunset with re-supply/lights in the car, do the Humphrey's Peak loop CCW back to Sunset then head up Sunset to Little Bear, hang a right at the bottom onto the eq.bypass & follow the AZT all the way around finishing with the climb up Shultz Creek.

    OR

If we just want to do the 44 of the second loop, then I'd start at Shultz Creek, climb that, climb Sunset to Little Bear do the eq.bypass loop back to the car @Shultz.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the Photo thread, so here's a couple more from the 88:

First time at the Inner Basin.
    From Flagstaff - Crazy 88/2

    Near Walnut Canyon
    From Flagstaff - Crazy 88/2

    Rolling through Flag

Bah, it only took me about 20 minutes to go up Sunset. You'd hardly notice it and soon forget it after going down LB!

You want to make it easy? LB has a shallower grade than Sunset, but it's longer. Steeper always tires me out over longer. Then again, I shouldn't talk much without trying it.

Another possible option is to start at the bottom of Schultz, take Mt. Elden road up to Red Onion which gets you fo the top of LB. Then go down LB, up Little Elden, WL Rd, and all the rest of the 88. Adds some climb, but puts it at the beginning of the ride as opposed to the end. So many options, so little time to pursue!

I really like the ending of the traditional 88....what can I say, that was my first race ever, so I'm partial. Something about knowing you are 7 miles away from the finish after 81 miles of riding...and you have to climb 1000ft. A 1000ft you've climbed many times before....but now seems to go on FOREVER......I like that kind of mind-screw......it makes me laugh....I laugh to cover the tears.....
