new to mtn biking and real new to the area. got a bud i ride with to help hone my riding skills, the SO, well she's not quite as interested in the technical stuff he and i do.
so in the phx area first; we live down in laveen, i've ridden the area off pima quite a bit so i think there's some stuff there she won't mind but anything else on somo that i need to check out please? and of course anything else in the metro area.
but where i'm really interested is the flagstaff, sedona area. looking for someplace to get out of the heat once in a while. climbing and descending is fine, she wants a workout, just nothing technical.
i've got a local mtn biking book that i've gone through but i think it's a few yrs old. thx much for your time and help.
and if you're on the shuttle and you see a guy going real slow and sweating a lot on a purple klein on the road up somo, don't laugh to hard but please say hey. i'm an old time road guy who knows how to stay on the correct side of the yellow lines.

Yes, there are a lot of good smooth singletracks in Flagstaff. Temps are wonderfull too. Just don't get caught in a thunderstorm these days (start early or very late, usually works out well). If we get into a drier pattern you don't have to worry though.
Now, I don't know the smooth singletracks in Flagstaff, I know the Ft Valley Trail is one of them and there are a few branching trails in that area that are also pretty smooth. There are other trail systems in Flagstaff as well that are smooth, but I don't know them. Hopefully some locals or people with knowledge will come in and describe them, but otherwise Flagstaff sounds exactly what you are looking for, it has that kind of riding! (in addition to every other kind!).

Consider Papago Park area. It's been a while since I've ridden out there, but from what I recall a lot of the trails are pretty smooth and tame. Outside of that, Pima and Dynamite area was pretty smooth
But if you want like hardpacked smooth, you're probably going to have to head north...
thx for quick reply's. and i guess i kinda said this wrong, where i am genuinely interested in the flag/sedona area i don't want to miss any places to ride down here. we'll be riding here more than there in all reality. (no thurs morning stupidity douger, it's all good info.)
i'd read about papago for family type trips, gonna have a step-punk to drag through the dirt here shortly.
isn't there some group or someplace people just group to do night rides on smooth stuff? is it at papago? i thought i'd read a while back about night rides where folks will camp for the weekend and do the riding at night. maybe i dreamt it. maybe the rhum was messing with my mind one night.
BCT does not seem like the type of trail the OP might be interested in. For a new rider it will seem difficult and intimidating at times as well as getting a little remote in certain areas. Little bit of tech and lots of climbing IMO.
Here are some of my suggestions.
Phoenix - Desert Classic, Papago Park, McDowell Regional Park-Sport Loop, Pima and Dynamite, Usery Mtn Park (Not Pass Mtn!), White Tanks Comp Loops (skip the Tech loop as well as the switchback climb in the back)

papago park is smooth.. i guess.. i don't know .. lol lory state park by fort collins, co is the smoothest single track i've ridden.. but like a few have mentioned az and "smooth" doesn't really go together.
but i honed my skills at papago.. and i have scars to prove it a lil bit of everything.. plus the fishbowl on the east side is pretty gnarly
For Flagstaff: +1 on Campbell Mesa. That's the smoothest trails around here but flowy fast and fun. Also Fisher Point/Walnut canyon area. They are all connected via the AZ trail.
North towards the Big Ditch are sections of the AZ trail and the Tusayan loops which are also smooth and flat.
los burros up by pinetop is pretty buttery smooth...
also the 305 in prescott is about as smooth as it gets...like a fresh waxed..............corvette (what did you think I was gonna say)
Since you're in Laveen, FINS is pretty close to you. That place is really cool for noobs and for training. Lots of ups and downs and most of it is pretty smooth. It's in the Estrella Mountain community south of Estrella and Vineyard. Fun place! I would go there more but it's a long ways from Anthem.
