    Im just wondering...

I have a feeling this will go completely off topic, end up getting locked, and or get people a time out in the corner but here we go...

For the past 2 weeks now or so, there have been all this off topic funny, in a weird funny way, stuff on here, banned mtbr members, bashing of other people, bashing of moderators, blah blah blah blah. Is there some curse on the arizona forums strictly? Or as soon as you are born to arizona or move here you get some weird comical, sarcastic, sassy, humor? Because I once in a while check the colorado and california forums just for giggles, and rarely see this kind of stuff. Maybe im not on those forums enough, but all of this just seems to puzzle me.

I think its the arizona sun roasting our brains.

Man being around for a bit and all over this board I would say there is plenty of this going on in other forums . If you read the dh/fr forum much I see tons of flaming / name calling ect going on all the time. Heck most times any product bashing ends in lots of flames thrown everywhere.

No but you can say "us super cool", maybe RAD dh'ers again

Clockwork- I have seen plenty on the dh/fr thread, but I was talking about the other state forums. I need to start looking more apparently.

I smell a locked thread coming....

I will say that I have found the last few weeks to be the most entertaining time I have spent on this site. Everybody needs to remember, it's just the internet. It only hurts you if you allow it to.

That and I am pissed I missed (and don't understand) some of the drama.... it's really not fair. Us outsiders need some background/history.

Is this going to get me a time-out?

    You guys crack me up.

This is a consumer review board that uses these forums to attract us to advertisment. If moderators don't think what is happening on the board is helping that goal, or is just lame and nasty, they stop the conversation. There is nothing wrong with that. If you though mtbr.com was something different that that you aren't thinking too hard.

There are plenty of non-moderated forums out there where you can say whatever you want. I'm no insider with consumerreview.com, but I bet they simply ask the moderators to keep things civil and somewhat sanitary so it does'nt turn people away from the site. If the bulk of people viewing the forums were just looking for gay/dik/fart/puke jokes I bet that would be bad for business. It's probably better if there are photos, ride reports and interesting bike conversation.
It works for me that it's moderated. I like to laugh, even at the threads that get locked, but I'm glad they aren't allowed to fester. People have no common sense or understnading of how things work anymore..

    Bob's got it.

And based on what I've seen, yeah, other states do have this problem -- only they get it in the winter, when the snow is piled high and everyone's got cabin fever. AZ gets exactly the same way, only it's the heat and it's on the flipside of the calendar. Every year.

I know there are some disappointed, probably even angry, forum users right now. I'm not sure what to do say other than: Consumerreview.com is not a free-for-all, and the Arizona mountain biking forum is about mountain biking in Arizona. I'm not sure where anyone got the idea that it was "about" busting balls or posting off-topic content. Seriously, there's a zillion other places you can do that to your hearts' content. This is not that forum.

Don't like it? Gregg and Francois will listen to your complaints. Please, please do explain to them why you think you're owed the freedom to post anything that pops into your head.

Owed anything? I don't think that.

It would be fine if there were any interesting bike-related conversations, but there aren't. Just the same old boring crap, over and over and over.
Most were just having fun and trying to make people laugh, because this board has been dead otherwise.

Several dozen PMs from DH haters, freeriders, parents, and other people-who-aren't-like-you disagree. Believe me, I hear it from every side every day.

The past week's threads also say otherwise. We've had some amazing photo threads, interesting discussions, all kinds of good stuff.

Obviously you disagree. And that's fine! If the content that's posted isn't to your taste, and you are unable or unwilling to follow MTBR's very simple posting guidelines when you do post something to your taste, then this isn't the forum for you.

Sure they care! They care at least as much as the posters who continue (for example) to create fake accounts, just to post off-topic stuff so they can brag about getting banned and how stupid MTBR is, clearly care. Folks put a lot lot lot of effort and energy into things, especially when they feel they've been wronged, singled out, or are owed something.

People just need to head over to the Passion folder and check out the "hot mountain biker chick" folder or start up Huckin Kitty again. Temps will cool off in a month or so.

    Wow, it's not locked.... yet!

I have a hard time seeing this site as a "review site" or anything of the likes. I see way too much OT discussions and questions for it to be considered that. However, I do see this as a mountain biking community and as with any society, comes rules. I am not complaining about the rules, if I didn’t care for them I would frequent. This is a business and the owners are allowed the freedom to run it how they see fit.

However, I think you only hear from those that care “too much”. This community should and needs to be civil; if not there are consequences to it. However, good discussion (even when heated) is healthy, in my opinion, for a community. I would hate to see things go too much in the other direction and create a stale environment. I like the diversity here and I like the differing opinions, I just don’t want to see that fall apart.

And yes, I do enjoy a good fight every now and then. There are fair ways to fight that are neither personal nor offensive.

    Boy this thread is depressing.
I don't know about everyone else.... But ill be up in showlow this weekend, like I have been in the past few months. Ill be enjoying the nice cool weather, drinking beer and riding some pretty sweet trails that some other fellow mountain bikers started. I think I might do some trail maintence too... errrr poaching to some haters... snort.
Would be cool if more people show up and have a good time, but ill doubt that will happen. But who knows... maybe.

JD, that's exactly my view as well.

I think there is a gap in understanding the difference between attacking someone, and attacking someone's ideas. It's a big difference!

Personal attacks are toxic to online communities, end of story. Hence the current environment here in F66. I thought our community could be more self-regulating but clearly that was not the case. This, again, because posters really do care.

if you want a forum where no one listens to anyone, read comments on AZCentral.com. Its all flaming, trolling, totally partisan, people howling at the moon. Disgusting and sad. Different ideas are great, otherwise we all are stuck in our own echo chambers and you get the sort of partisan howling at the moon that has become too much of our "news" channels. Different ideas from people you know or have an e-familiarity with are even better, cause maybe just maybe you give a crap enough about the person to listen. Some of the best friendships I have made over the last few yrs on here and FB are with people I have very fundamental and philosophical disagreements with, but the fact that we can show each other enough respect to have a dialog makes the friendship that much better. Paul has always been consistent in allowing people to respectfully disagree about off-topic material.

Personally, I dont care about language or pics or whatever - doesnt bother me. But as Chongo and others noted, MTBR has rules and if you want to participate you need to keep it closer to PG13. Again, not a big deal in the big picture.

Personally I dont care when a couple people post 30 times about inside jokes, but Paul has made it clear that too is not allowed if there is not some bike content in it. not a hard rule to follow. That's what FB is for.

Paul - my one gripe in how sometimes things get handled is that some threads, even when off-topic, are going along just fine when one bonehead turns it nasty and hijacks the whole thing. I would prefer to see that one person get shut down. For every stupid immigration\dh vs xc\pot etc post there are plenty of respectful ones. The people who are gonna hate the mods hate them already, so might as well make clear examples of when someone goes over the line rather than punish others who are having a strong but respectful discussion. Just my $.02.

The best thing you can do is meet other MTBRs. Just like work etc, it takes all the edges off the internet and email etc. Just about no one I've met from this board in person has failed to become my friend. When you sift through the noise and silliness and posturing, MTBR is a fantastic resource for just about everything, you get out of it what you put into it.

Well you make a good point, CB. Mostly that's laziness on my part, unfortunately. I could go through and manually excise the offensive crap, but then I'd have to excise any quote of the offensive crap and pretty soon it's just ... a lot of work. But yeah, I hear what you're saying and I'll do what I can to try and save otherwise interesting threads. Thanks.

How many readers use the state forums for product reviews?

I do. Not so much for "reviews," but if I have questions or need suggestions about a product, I generally ask here first. Many of us ride the same style and the same trails, so beta that others have learned is useful.

Case in point, last week I inquired about a new pack with some specific requirements. The most popular answer was the Osprey Raptor. I went out the next day and bought one. It's been great.

you're a more patient man than I, I'd go more for the sociofascist ***** role and just lock the person out for a week with a quick note why - 1 week, trolling. 1week, offensive speech. Just like hockey. imo, this should not be a job that sucks you in.

So if everyone is run off who will respond? Just the ones promoting products! Will that provide a fair review? Needs to be a balance between being an open forum and a place that is locked down!

Well, uh, I'm not sure who's been "run off." If anyone has left, was it anyone who actually responded to threads with anything other than nonsense?

Just adding another point of view! Like I said, some threads where out of line. Yet I have seen a lot of off topic posts over the years around here! I've seen many threads left while others pulled! When both had similar content! Guess it's all about who you hang with!

From what I have seen in the last week we have lost alot of mtbr members not just dh/fr guys either and not all banned either . Casualties are everywhere from the recent threads.

Again, well, fair enough. You seem really intent on sub-categorizing local riders into specific groups and then somehow extrapolating that into behavior patterns. If you choose to leave a message board that's just how it is. You'll either get over the hissy-fit and return or you won't. Either way, life goes on.

And, honestly, if your behavior is such that you got banned from a mountain biking message board, you were probably on my ignore list already so I wouldn't notice

You must have your head in the sand not to notice the amount of "drama" that has been going around. The board is missing a number of frequent posters... Personally I am sorry to see them go as I thought they added value to the board. Personally, I don't like to censor by information, I like seeing different persecptives and responses.

Anyways, life does indeed go on.

Don't know about my head in the sand. Perhaps so. Or perhaps I've been up early riding rather than depending on MTBR for a biking fix.

There's enough drama in real life. I don't buy into it on the Internet.

So have we all which is why we discuss biking and other social topics on MTBR. Plus it's a great way to get through the workday.

Drama on the internet is more fun, because it’s less real and easy to forget.

Went for a ride this morning at 5am, was a nice two hour spin (a bit hot but what can you do). Still left plenty of time to watch “As the World Turns” on MTBR.

Please, please do explain to them why you think you're owed the freedom to post anything that pops into your head.

    p.
We get these same types of things on the Oregon board in the winter so you are not alone.

Subjects such as poaching, illegal building, trail etiquette and advocacy for different groups are likely to be contentious. They are also important discussions to have. I would err on the side of letting folks hash it out.
