Almost no one ever rides the Heart Trail on Mount Elden near Flagstaff, because it's quite hard, poorly designed, and has absolutely no flow. But I do, now and then. Because it's got gorgeous expansive views, uniquely interesting rocks, and absolutely no people on it. And because it drops over 1500' in less than 2 miles. Of all the trails near Flagstaff, I think it's the one that feels the least like a trail near Flagstaff.
A few years ago, I wrote a paper about the unique sedimentary (non-volcanic) geology of the eastern flank of Mount Elden, which the Heart Trail bisects. It's a pretty neat piece of ground, featuring a lot of the rock-strata you'll find in the Grand Canyon, except upside down.
