    Idea! The HAB thread

Love it or hate it, hike-a-bike (HAB) is a part of mountain biking in AZ for sure. I don't mind it as it usually gives my riding muscles a chance to rest a bit.

There are two slogans we throw around from time to time: If you're not HAB'ing, the views probably suck & If you're not HAB'ing, you're just riding your bike!!

With all that non-sense I had put together an entire photo album of nothing but HAB pics, it's kinda hilarious actually. So, with that in mind, post up your best or worst HAB pic.

Here are a bunch of my favorites:

HAB train during the Lemmon Drop.
    From Lemmon Drop 2011

Dag Nabbit topping out on the AZT Blue Ridge HAB.
From AZT #28 - Blue Ridge Passage

The Bevinator & CoyoteKis HAB'ing in Martinez Canyon.
From AZSF - Picketpost to Kelvin

Me, slogging through wet sand at BCT.
    From AZSF - BCT rain/mud

    Dag Nabbit enjoying the Tortolitas.
From AES - Tor De 50

A special thanks to Mtn-rider for capturing my total self-destruction cresting the White Horse Hills.
    From AZT SF Peaks

Dag Nabbit nearing the top of Tom's Thumb from the north.
    From AES - McDowell 46

Chris and I shared a mutual feeling during last year's AZT300 north of Kentucky Camp.
    From AZT 300

Mingus Mtn wasn't THAT bad, was it??
    From AES - Coco250

and finally, from this year's AZT300, Scott Jones pushing up Molino, yikes!
    From AZT300: Redemption!! 2013

You know it's steep when your hands are on your bars pushing and your feet are behind your rear wheel...yikes.
Version 2 of the GPX library (due out soon) has a section called the "Best of Gill Couto". Guaranteed to have you off your bike pushing.

I like to say "HAB is good" since adding a little hiking takes you places you wouldn't otherwise get to. You're always rewarded with either a great downhill or even more HAB on the way down.

Exiting the big wash at BCT somewhere along LPL.

Windgate beats up a lot of aspiring HABaneros.

    Post-HAB recovery.

Never getting talked into HAB again.

Did we just HAB that? The OP, me, and Dag Nabbit behind the camera.

    Some wet HAB at BCT.

No way to ride this rocky mess, west end of National.

Some steep HAB at the BCT Jamboree.

Some big-boulder HAB on the BCT.

Hands down, the most HAB I've ever done in my life in a one week time period occurred last summer on the Colorado Trail Race. One particularly memorable HAB was Fooses Creek; one of the steepest singletrack HAB pushes I have ever done to date.

Another memorable HAB was from the Stagecoach 400 ITT a buddy and I did over Xmas of 2012. There's a vicious little spot in the Anza-Borrego Desert called the Pinyon Drop Off (aka Heart Attack Hill) that really puts the hurt on a man.

Mingus mountain. Part of the sufferfest of the Coconino 250. (The big boys love these gnarly rocks as their DH runs on their big bikes.) Totally worth it once ya get to the top. Just part of the "ride"! :-)

    +1

Rode that POS once. Never again. The thing is, it sucks you in if you ride from the north. Starts out with some nice flowy trail (hey, this is fun). Then tosses in a little technical chunk (this is challenging, but still fun). Then it hits you with the crap in Maad's picture - for a long time. Not fun.

It is good training for AZT300 though.

+2 - that was, as they say, level 2 fun. Not fun at the time, fun to talk about later. Agreed, lures you in, surly temptress it is. It all started with a friend's email -

I simply have very little idea what to expect. I know it's about 20 miles back to the vehicle from where we pop out at Seven Springs Campground. I know the trail head is about 7-8 miles up Spur Cross Rd. And I know the trail itself is about 10 miles. Other than that - blind. I don't know if this will take us 5 hours or 15. So I can't make any promises about the ride quality, distance, difficulty, whether or not we can make it, etc. I know you well enough to know that you will roll with anything - and love it (i.e. "Dang - I'm bleeding out both knees, broke a crank arm, out of water and food, and the sun has been down for over an hour...this is the greatest ride EVER!!!").

Maybe we need a change of friends...

Rode Monarch Crest last summer, looked down that Fooses Creek drainage - I can believe that, it was steep dropping off the ridge

More from Trail #4, this one is from the vault. I think 1995 on my 1st mountain bike, Trek 930 hardtail which I rode for 15 years!! I was only about a year into mountain biking at the time, so this was definitely intimidating.

Sheesh, no wonder why my knee is blown out - I pushed more than I rode! Gaw-dam HAB! After doing 3/4 of the Lemmon Drop, I didn't walk right for a week. Waaaaaaay to much HAB for a downhill shuttled ride!

    My contributions:

AZT Jamboree 2011 Prickly Pear HAB. Self shot by Freeskier.

Dells, PMC 2011. Unkown souls suffering.

Spruce Mountain, PMC 2011, hour 11. About 2 hours still to go! Freeskier must love the HAB since he even passed up a free beer from a passing truck at the top. Of course, that's the only time I'd find a Bud Light refreshing.

Habbing a great time up on Casner. I'm pretty sure he's smiling.

Friends don't let friends HAB alone......every step one step closer to destruction! ......worth it.

BC and Noel showing us the way up Casner.

Blue Ridge HAB. This was helmet off caliber. 30 minutes to the top. GilaMonster and Freeskier making an appearance.

East End HAB, traditional style exemplified by Freeskier.

    Almost there!

Kentucky Camp 2011. (I couldn't keep up with him in 2012!)

    Suburban Thunderbird HAB.....

    ...after which you're like....

...but then you get to the bottom and you're like...

    I hope everyone HAB's a great day!

Awesome!! I'd give you more rep for that if I could. I remember those T-bird Mtn-rider's revenge HAB's being over 90º too. Probably the last time I was clean shaved as well, I have to go with the grizzled bikepacker stereotype now.

I think this is my favorite pic of GilaMonster on that Blue Ridge HAB, he looks so happy!!
    From HAB

The Lemmon Drop is prime example of why you should read/review ride reports, downhill shuttle....with 4000' of climbing!!
