    Friday the 13th Fotos 12.13.13

Guess what?? I rode my bike this week!

A visit from Cenobuns who came down from Prescott for a taste of SoMo finally got me out.

Zort keeps breaking frames and all that's left in his garage is a '93 Rockhopper.... this didn't seem to slow him down much.

It's always good to see familiar faces on the trail. Look at that cornering flair!

Epicrider and Trigirl were also on the ride.

Thanks to Rick and Amy for getting me out on SoMo again.

A few from my last 3 weeks. Back from work for a month and trying to get in all the riding I can to make up for my 7 months hiatus.

How about a few pics from my first week down in New Zealand...spectacular riding, scenery, and people. Love this place so far.

Rode up to the top of Craigeburn Ski Area from the valley below to pick up some sweet singletrack. A rather grueling 7km climb to the top. The ski area was completely deserted and apparently crime isn't much of a concern since there were still skis lying about and unlocked doors...things are a bit different here...

The skingletrack started in a rather sketchy scree field. You might be able to see the trail across the mountain on the other small scree field...A bit like Colorado?

From there it gets back into the forest on some awesome leaf lined, super fast trail. They don't put pinch points in the trail to slow you down, it's just a beautiful flowing trail along the contour or straight on down. This is the first time I've ever smelt my brakes...as fast as you dare.

Took a well earned break at Helicopter Hill to take in the views. Stunning...

This ride was one of the top rides I've ever done. Maybe just because it was my first ride in a foreign country in completely new surroundings, but the way they build trail and the soil conditions were grin inducing the entire time. Bringing my bike with me was the best decision I've made.

I didn't take a whole lot of photos since I was having too much fun, but all of the pics i did take are here: Craigeburn Forest MTB ride - chainslap's Photos

Absolutely. I just got here myself, but I'll be traveling around in a van riding as much as possible so by the time you head here I'll have the goods. How long you planning on staying?

    Chainslap,
Great photos, looks like a lot of fun. Just thought I'd mention that before you pack the bike back up to bring back stateside take the time to clean it and your shoes thoroughly. In fact do everything you can to remove all traces of dirt. I brought mine back from the UK several years ago and it got stuck in customs for several months due to the "soil sample" that came with it. If I was doing it again myself, I would remove and discard the tires prior to packing back up.
Just sharing a bit of info from my experience that may save you some trouble. Enjoy your trip!

When we went to NZ several years ago, we spent some extra time clearing customs since they wanted to thoroughly examine our gear for dirt, debris, and seeds. They checked our boots, tents, etc and then sprayed them with disinfectant! On the return to the US, there were no checks or inspection.

If he got the bike into NZ without much trouble, I would not expect much on the return.

To Philbo, who indicated a possible trip to NZ in the future -- here is our NZ blog with lots of links:

Yup, I made sure my bike and shoes were spotless before coming over. I also installed new tires so those wouldn't be a problem. Customs checked the wheels pretty thoroughly and the cleats of my shoes but once they saw those they just glanced at the bike and let me through. Pretty hassle free really.

I kind of doubt the US would have much bio security, it's not like there isn't plenty of non-native vegetation...

None of it can be invasive either...
The secret to mountain biking is pretty simple. The slower you go the more likely it is you’ll crash.

Granted mine was shipped and not carried on the plane, but I was quite surprised by them deciding to not only hold the bike, but threaten to ship it back to the UK. Took some serious effort to get back.

So take the same precautions on the return trip that you took going out and you should be fine.
