The best Natty video EVER ! (read the story before you watch it)

So my best friend from the midwest has been out here for 10 days on vacation and ever since he got here, he's been wanting me to take him mountain biking. Now, I've been best friends with him since we were little kids and I love him like a brother but (how do I put this lightly ?) He has never been the most athletic guy. He has never played sports and has never thrown a leg over a bicycle since we were kids, let alone a mountain bike.

He went with us to Flagstaff twice and drove the shuttle truck for us and he kept wanting to try some DH runs. Other riders basically talked me out of letting him do it, for obvious reasons. We kept telling him that it is much harder than it looks in videos but he was persistent so on his last day here, I geared him up, threw him on my big bike and shuttled him to Buena Vista.

How many people can jump on a mountain bike for the first time ever and clean Natty from top to bottom ?

My first ride was at Papago Park and I SUCKED !

maybe its similar to the idea that drunk people who crash their cars dont break many bones because they're not all tensed up before the impact. that dude looked like he was about to bounce right off the bike a couple times, but he just let the momentum carry him thru whatever happened, unaware of the horrific consequences if he crashed.

The funny thing is, I told him when we started that the bike could go over anything on this trail as long as he stayed relaxed and didn't freak out. All he had to do was keep his weight back when he felt the need and relax.

Same thing I've been trying to teach Drew but he just won't listen !

It was pretty cool watching him negotiate down. Not to take anything away from him -- he did awesome and your advice to him was perfect -- but it seemed to me there were a few times that were he on a lesser travel and less slack bike that he would likley have communed with the mountain in a more direct manner.

    Way cool to watch.

That's why I put him on the big bike- it's a lot more forgiving.

Even with a big bike, I never would have went down the waterfall on my very first ride !

Think about your first time ever riding a mountain bike...

Awesome Rick. Was he one of your old freestylin buddies?

Next time introduce him to the front brake. Nah, that could be disastrous...

You sure he didn't do some secret training. Dropping rocks making switchbacks impressive. Does make you wonder how a second run would go. Mind over matter. Wow this is the second instance in week where a rookie has shown me they can ride. After our ride Saturday when James who had never been down national took a nice line down the water fall and then cleaned the upper Triangle. Which gave me the confidence to do it, and clean. Thank you James.

You gotta be freakin kidding right...hadn't ridden a bike since a kid. I would've shat myself on many of the Natty obstacles (not even talking about the waterfall) on my first mountain bike ride even if I was on a freakin magic carpet I think there's more to this guy than meets the eye

I have never seen anything like it , Ive seen 15 year seasoned moto and XC guys fold like a soft taco and not even able to do any of what he did , You need to get him going in the sport for sure because he certainly can stay relaxed and just ride.....very very rare

No, that was someone who has never ridden before, riding Natty top to bottom after I told him to not be in a hurry.

I'm curious as to why you think he would go any faster ?
