Anyone out here ride a tandem and have a good way to transport it? If so what method do you use (hitch, roof top, etc.)? I've got an Aunt & Uncle that are looking at buying a tandem but they're very concerned about transporting it. Since they're a little older and worried about lifting such a heavy bike up to the roof, they would prefer to use a hitch mount if it's possible. Thanks for the advice and if anyone has pictures it would be much appreciated.

We have 2 tandems. We only carry them on the roof, but there are options for hitch mount carriers eg. Draftmaster. If the car is wide, some people get by with just removing the wheels and using a normal hitch rack. Our tandems are too wide for our Subaru wagon.

Our roof bars sit quite high off the roof so if we are transporting one, we just turn the bars around and lay it flat with the bars supporting the cranks so that the pedals don't hit the roof.

I modified some light weight racks that were designed for racing bikes. These have wheel trays front and rear and a clamp for the down tube. I got 5 of these from a shop that were getting rid of them for $10 each. I've had to bend out the wheel trays to suit MTB tyres and I've modified the clamps on a couple to fit MTB diameter down tubes. I always use guy straps from the top tube to the roof bars as well. Also modified one by bolting on a front axle with QR skewer instead of the wheel tray and down tube clamp

For tandems, I take 2 of these racks, take off one wheel tray off each and use some square tubing to join the two lengthwise. Voila, a tandem length rack.

It is a job to get them up there. It requires 2 people usually, and a small step helps. There are options for getting roof racks that have pivot or lift mechanisms, but they are quite expensive.

Even more expensive option is a van/people mover or a light weight trailer.

I just got an old MTB tandem. If you take front & rear wheels off it fits on the back rack, esp. if I bungy cord the h bars, etc. It is not wider than the vehicle including side mirrors. We have a Toyota Highlander, which is not extremely big but wider than a Subaru.

I put our Calfee tandem in the back of our Impreza WRX with both wheels off.
Just fits.
WWe sewed a king bedshhet into a tube and slip this over the bike to keep grease off the intreior.
