I'm looking for some new shorts and jerseys for HOT and HUMID riding in the South.

Mostly, I ride for an hour or two at one sitting, several times a week. For this, most any short and jersey that I have works fine. But on weekends I ride for 3 to 5 hours at one time and plan to do a couple 24 hours events this year, one of them will be solo. On these longer rides, particularly in 95-100 degree weather, I am always wishing for more padding, better fit (less bunching and binding) and cooler fabrics or vented panels.

I want to buy some new apparel and would appreciate advice from experienced endurance riders.

Thanks,
AntiLoc

What are you usually wearing now?

I haven't done any endurance racing yet. But have put in some 5-6 hour road rides without any problems down there. I have several pairs of Performance Elite Bib shorts which I have been pleased with. I pair did start to fray abit recently, but stopped (probably had them over a year now). As far as jerseys, I really prefer a race cut or pro cut jersey to reduce the excess. Also a nice long zipper is helpful in the heat.

As far as the solo 24 hour, I have read that it is not uncommon to change into dry clothing several times over the course of the race.

I've tried many different shorts (Pearl, Assos, etc) and have settled on the Castelle Progetto Y2/VT shorts. The are very soft but durable and have a great chamois. Not cheap but for 24 hour solo efforts you want comfort and a lot of Chamois Butt'r.

The top of the line Sugoi are my current favorite and I have three pair. The latest Pearls look good and I may try them next.

For what it's worth...I like the pearl izumi ultra sensor shorts. As for jerseys, I like what ever is on the sales rack that isn't too loud :).

If your going to do any _solo_ 24 hour events, my suggestion is take 4 changes of clothes (shorts, jersey, socks) and change them every 6 hours. If your riding with a team put on clean set of clothes before each lap. It will make the race much more enjoyable, and it will still be one load of very stinky laundry :)

for really long rides here is my $0.02 on shorts

1) get bib shorts. way more comfortable than standard.
2) Exte Ondo is my favorite for cost/performance. a little hard to find (I use www.bicyclinghub.com) but worth the search. excellent chamois, no frills or new-fangled cut, just top quality materials with excellent fit. they do run a little short in the legs though, but this is a minor gripe for all the comfort they provide. I use them on 7+ hour rides and have never had any discomfort whatsoever (can't say that for many shorts, and I've tried a lot of htem).

cheers
