I guess I'll get it going with my spankin' new ('04) Ram XT 2500.

-05 Sherman Flick 150mm
-X-9 Shifters and Derailleur
-Mavic F219 Disc rims w/ XT hubs and 2.5 WTB Weirwolf's
-Race Face Prodigy XC cranks and FR BB (soon to be Evolve w/ X-type BB)
-Deore Hydro's with an 8" up front/6" in back
-Shimano 545 Pedals
-Easton EA70 post, Ritchey stem, Specialized Enduro bar

This will primarily be a light-duty freeride, rad ass trailbike!

Nice bike -- I'd look into getting a 20mm thru-axle for the front to stiffen it up. Can be done fairly cheaply.

Whoa... a 6 inch SC fork with a QR axle? Crazy... Uh... You can't convert standard QR into 20 mm. You have to get new lowers with the 20 mm dropouts. Manitou uses an optional hex-lock axle. My first impressions are good, feels stiff.

for my style of riding. Even blowing through rock gardens and fast rooty downhills, I didn't notice any flex of deflection. I have yet to do any drops. I had to stay budget minded when building the bike. But I foretell a Sherman Slider in my future!

This bike was orignally baught by my buddy back when we were in grade school. last summer me and him moved in together with our gf's. turns out women suck. my buddy and his women moved far away but this beauty lol, has been left chained to this tree outside my apartment for over a yr, im thinking of cutting the chain and making her my own, a single speed probably.

this bike is probably from the 1990-1993 era im not sure. i baught my huffy in 5th grade with money i saved for yrs, then he saved more and baught this bike, put my huffster to shame. well here she is in all her rusted glory.

Heres a pic of my 2005 Raleigh RDS 7. As far as I am aware, this model is only sold in South Africa. It features a single pivot ali frame with Fox Float R at the back and an F100R fork. My version has a full XT grpupset including dual control shifters and discs. So far I am very impressed...

A guy in our group rides a yellow one, alo seem to enjoy the RDS quite abit. Still...I dunno bike seems heavy compared to my almost stock Giant NRS3. I love the RM9 hardtail frame thought.

Your mate would be the Dirtrider dude who rides an RDS 5. The frame aint heavy, its the components that do it. Mine is just a tad heavier than my giant hardtail.

Aahh yes. Well he does not own a NRS, his girlfriend does, which is a small, he rides a large frame so the RDS will feel better than the NRS to him.

This is my wife's hardtail, which is basically stock and is doing comfort duty, though it did some serious rides before we got her a FS bike. The only changes are:

- LX shifters - taken from her Rocky ETSX
- Weyless riser bar - comfy position for cruising with stock stem
- Avid SD3 rear brake - added after adjustment screw stripped on stock Tektro
- Older, cushier Velo saddle taken off my V-Link

We used to have SRAM Rockets on this bike, but they went to the ETSX. The ETSX now has SRAM ESP (8-spd!), so the Rockets may go back on the M80. We both like twist shift...

Raleigh is staging a come back in SA. They have a full MTB and road range which are very good value considering the frame quality and parts spec.

I checked Raleigh S.A.'s website. The higher end stuff looks good (both road and off road). The middle and lower end stuff is still rather hoaky.

I picked this one up for cheap and have started cleaning it up. There's a little more info on my vintage site (http://www.geocities.com/cegrover/vintagemtb.html) and I'll post better photos once it's done. I always liked the dual material "Technium" bikes. This one has a front triangle of aluminum tubing bonded to steel lugs and a steel rear triangle.

Here is my new '05 Ram 4.0 in my LBS as I was doing the final tune up before taking it home. It is stock except the I chose the Diamonback platforms for pedals. I still have teh Shimano 520's that came with it for when I make the jump to clipless.

My LBS owner liked it so much after I let him ride it, he is going to get one for himself (I guess there are a few '05's left in the warehouse). I am totally stoked about this riding season.

Here's my '04 Avenger. Normally I run a '99 Fox FLOAT R shock, but early season when I'm not riding off road I swap the shock out for the piece of aluminum that you see in its place to make it a hardtail.

I just built this up for my Girlfriend. She's pretty stoked on it. It's not totally finsished. The wheelset will be F219's with XT rear hub and a Quando TX 20mm front, XT discs with 8" rotors.

The fork came off a Trek Session 7. It's a 1.5 Manitou Stance 170mm w/ TPC+ . Pretty sick...

This is my new 2006 Mojave 8.0. I have had it several weeks and having been riding it almost daily. I absolutely love it. I changed the the seat post and stem. I wanted to try a longer stem without paying a whole lot to get a feel for the length so I found a bargain at JensonUSA. I plan on replacing the two items with better quality pretty quickly. I am a clydesdale so I was concerned about the frame. So far it is very stiff and the only thing that needed tweaked was the spring in the fork. I replaced it with a extra firm one from Manitou. That was right at twenty dollars. It is equipped with all Deore except the rear der. which is LX. The wheels are joy-tech hubs with Alex Dm-21's. I figure when if I start having problems with them I can go to the Deore XT/Rhynolyte rim combo. The Hayes MX-2's stop really good. Can you tell I am very happy with the bike? I know Raleigh's get a bad rap on here but I wanted something different and wanted a good value. I feel that I got both.

I know I posted this once before, but that was before it was totally finished. Here it is, final incarnation. Rear wheel is a XM321 with an XT hub, FSA 1.5 headset with an FSA FR200 75mm stem, Scott O/S FR bar 1.5" rise, 8" rotor up front and a 7" in the rear with Deore Hydro's.

The rear adapter is an Avid 185mm. It'll work for the rear with Shimano's, but not the front. I tried two calipers and two different adapters, but the front adapters aren't perfectly flat were they interface with the caliper. I tried one set of the CPS washers on the bottom bolt and that would make up for the bevel, but I only got about 80% pad contact on the rotor, so I said screw it and went 8".

The front tire is a 2.2 Specialized Adrenaline Pro. It's about 4mm wider than the 2.5 WTB Weirwolf rear, yet 100grams lighter... weird, but whatever, it works. The wheels are handbuilt by myself, my first set. I'm glad I'm using my girlfriend as the Guinnea Pig... hehe....

The fork is sick! So underrated. Of course it's OEM with TPC+ and 170mm, not like the typical Stance. If the Kingpin feels like this, I might pick one up. Excellent small bump compliance, and forget about bottoming it!

It's a 17". It had its maiden freeride voyage this weekend. It's so nice. Perfectly balanced front to rear, super light in the air. I'm gonna try to get my hands on another, in my size.

When Shimano introduced the concept of flat bar road bikes years ago, they held a design competition to highlight the new Rapidfire shifters and front derailleurs for road bikes.

My vision was a vehicle that represented the fastest way to ride between any two points, as long as they were both Starbucks locations. Of course, now there are so many of them that the ride could be as short as to the next corner of the same block!

The Cafe Racer has evolved in specification over time, becoming lighter and more efficient since the show. For example, the original version had RockShox Ruby SL suspension up front, with one of their Road suspension posts in back.

Certain items, like the British Racing Green Candy C pedals and Bronze tread Continental tires, didn't exist at the time of the original build, but certainly compliment the graphic scheme and match the intended use.

For safe drinking, the color and graphic matched Elite insulated bottle features an integrated thermometer, so you don't burn yourself on over-heated brew. To keep your joe warm for the long haul, there's an Ibis Hot Unit stainless thermos and bottle cage.

Anyway, enjoy the peek at a piece of rare Raleigh history - brewed for speed. I've owned a few Raleighs, and eventually sold all the rest, but this one is part of my permanent collection.

Hello People,

I've arranged myself a Raleigh XT 3500 frame, I'm planning to build it with the MARZOCCHI 888 203mm, though the frame is suppose to work with a 170mm and not 203mm I wanted to hear if anybody else did something similar with another brand of down crown fork ...

I confirmed with Raleigh Support over the phone that it's ok, however wanted to hear it from Raleigh riders, any comments ? I'll appreciate that.

I just built up the same xt3500 frame. Great bike! I am running a sherman breakout on a small sized frame and I find that the bike handles better with the travel at 150mm than at 170mm---but maybe its just me. would love to see pix of yours when you're done.

In the summer of 2004 I was too young to be on the pay-roll at my place of "employment" Everyone in my family has worked there at one point in time and I figured if I'm there I might as well work. So I started working, my fellow workers being 2-10 years older then my, but I kept up. So the middle of the summer by boss and my father toke me up to Hill Top Ski and Bike. There I pick out my true love for the last three years. That was my paycheck for most of that summer work! And I still sware it was the best paycheck ever.

My 17" comes in at 37lbs 3oz right now. But you might be right about the frame weight, the scale was calibrated at a shop to weigh frames of different sizes and materials, but that had the same rear shocks (Scott Ransom's), so it was off +/- a pound when I weighed it before the build. I'll have to get back down there and weigh it again.

Your 66 is over a pound heavier than my Sherman Breakout.

That is a dope Raleigh, though.

This was my first ever mountain bike i bought brand new.

It is a bonded frameset made of steel and aluminium which is glued together , in th same way John Tomacs Raleigh race bike was.

It has been retired for some years now and recently i have dusted it off and i am in the process of rebuilding it to its original specification , if not tricked out with period components like the snowflake laced custom front wheel i have on there at the moment.

I will be getting it resprayed in its original livery and i am trying to source a complete groupset for it which is proving a bit of a problem as it is a CAMPAGNOLO OLYPUS 8 speed and it seems to be V. expensive to buy as new old stock.

trying to find the original components for a 1991 bike is neither cheap or easy, but not one to be defeated i will keep going!

at the moment it weighs just under 24lbs but i want to get it lighter if i can.

yeah the frame doesn't seem that light, my bike is around 39 lbs. i'd like to eventually get an air fork and lighter tires and tubes and maybe lighten up a few more things and try to get it under 35.

I like your nice ride. :thumbsup: From the looks of it this bike should already weigh 35 lbs. That bashring weighs about a pound though. Are you running thick tubes and tires? If so you can save at least a couple of pounds of rotational weight in rubber.

the air shock helps but yeah, i don't have the lightest tires and the older marzo is a tank. i have my eye on a 66 or Z1 sl and some kevlar negevals and light tubes or maybe tubeless.

my initial build was pretty budget limited i actually spent under $1400 on that thing. i've become quite good at finding the ebay deals.

It started as a simple Raleigh M40, my first mountain bike I got in 7th grade. Well I grew up bought more expensive bikes, and now she has found her place among them.

The SS project started out with stripping everything off the bike using an old rear derailleur as a tensioner this picture is just after that process was finished.

Which lead to me wanting more, I wanted to get rid of that darn tensioner, so i bought a half link a new crankset, and BB Now I have one chain ring one gear and no regrets!

Thanks for the comment, I would say make it an SS if you never done it, it makes you feel like a kid all over again. Also for those rides where you don't want to take the expensive ride out its always nice to know that no one will even think of stealing it with only one gear.

Front triangle is from a 3500 for warranty replacement after a bent seat tube. Everything is stock except for the Sherman up front and the well used Speed V seat. I''m lovin' all the other Ram XTs in this thread! Disappointed that they've gone the way of the Honey-breasted warbling desert owl. :madmax:

Nice bike, I've been having a great time with my 04 Ram at Rays. My only complaint is that I had to file a lot of material off the chainguide to get it to clear the pivot. Heres a few pictures from last weekend.

It was a SS, now it's a 1x8 commuter.. I got it used last year and really dont know what model it is. Was covered in stickers. If i'm correct in reading the date code, it was made back in 2000. White to black fade on the triangle. Any idea what it might be? Tried searching and i can't find any info on Raleigh between 85 and 02.. heh.

I should have 2 hangers in for it by Thursday, and I'm going riding shortly after that! It looks like it's going to be a sweet ride. Just can't wait to give it a workout later this week. By the way... The color is more like Candy Apple Red metallic. It's not even close to orange. But the picks don't do the color any justice either!

yea the pics of mine on the ebay listing looked almost like a gloss black or dark charcoal. i got the frame and was pleasantly surprised to find the metallic platinum. Way cooler than it looked in the pics! U gotta let us know how the ride goes. I'm takin mine to a jump park tomorrow to see how it flys :D I'll try an get some in-flight pics :D

I doubt I'll get any picks but I'm for sure going to test it's limits tomorrow or Thursday for sure. I've been remodeling my house for over a month now and need a break way away from my house!

I'm going to hit some long epic trails as soon as I get the hanger mounted with a little bit of everything on the trail. Steep rock face rollers, and some drops up to about 7ft.Some long climbs and some decent descents. All the larger stuff is on Private land, and wont be able to hit that stuff for a couple more weeks.

Ok... Got it on today. Wow!!!!!! This bike rips. It's peddles so much better than my Stinky did. I took it around the block, and just banged around on it for about an hour, messing with the shock. I'm running almost no preload right now and around 145 lbs of air in it, and it rides like a hardtail till you roll off a curb.

Tomorrow is going to be a trail test. Just took off my 2.5" tires and put on some 2.3's for the long haul. I'm hoping it's not going to be so damn hot tomorrow. It's was 100 deg today and the humidity made it feel like 110! Not the best weather to go all out in the woods on a bike with no breeze!

I bought this bike a couple of weeks ago (August 2007). Originally purchased by a local police department and then sold off to an individual as something like an "excess" unit or the like. Hardly ridden, mostly sitting since 2003 (according to the previous owner).

I'll just be using it for cruising the neighborhood, etc. All I need now is the original "POLICE" decal so I can frighten all the local kids on the street... ;)

I am now considering quitting my job so I can ride my Raleigh full time. I don't need a roof over my head if I'm constantly on the move. The dog has agreed to hunt food for the both of us if I do, so I'm running out of reasons to go to work... anyone else suffering the same urges? I should probably hold out at least until I have the $$$ for a 66, but I dunno if I can. Maybe I can sell my beater truck for enough to get the fork, but I doubt it... hmmmmmm

Everything's pretty much stock on my 2007 Mojave 5.0 ... paid about $450 for it new in Edmond, Okla. ... Added a Trek Incite 9i computer ... it's my first mountain bike and I dig it!

I would post a picture of my Raleigh, but it's only a dept. store bike. Although it does perform well. I just need to adjust the gearing for the front derailleur and get a set of new rims. Maybe I'll get that done this winter before I ride her again in the spring.

The bars are just a cheap pair of Azonic riser bars. I got them from for $15 dollars and now it looks like theyre down to $10, great deal and they seem strong. The sette lock-on grips however are worn out already.

It's a hand me down from my uncle so I don't know the year, or anything about it for that matter... It's an Oversize M80 Aluminum 7005 Series. I have added a Bontrager saddle but I have no idea what model it is haha, it was a free gift to myself from my ex-girlfriend's dad...:thumbsup:

Some sweet bikes in this thread! I'm currently building a Ram XT 2500 and was wondering what other XT builders/riders are using for headsets. I'm down to a choice between 2 to fit up a set of Marz All Mountain SL forks -

Mine just came stock w/ a Pig reducer headset so that's what I ran on mine and never had a problem with it.

My frame came with the bottom cup of the FSA Pig reducer but nothing else, so I figured I may as well find a complete headset. Plus I've read that the Pig doesn't use a sealed bearing(s) like the CC or Orbit Pro. I ended up going with the CC - I don't think I could have gone wrong with either one though. Thanks for your reply.

My first build. Heck, my first bike in about a decade.

1st pic: Found a brand new '05 XT 2500 frame/shock on ebay and stole it. A shade under 9 lbs. without the seat and seat post.

2nd pic: Another ebay treasure - not brand new, but close. '06 Marz All Mountain SL.

3rd: A few more knick-knacks to really get things (almost) rolling - Easton bars and stem and CC headset.

4th: Alas, the fork steerer was cut too short by the previous owner :madman: But it sure looked good while it lasted.

So on to Plan D - as luck would have it a local Craigslister was selling a brand new '03 Manitou Sherman Slider (152mm travel - no SPV), unused and more importantly, with an intact steering tube. :thumbsup: Haven't documented that bit yet... or the Mavic 729 wheels or Truvativ Firex 3.3, but I'll catch up with those when the LBS is finished installing the cables and tuning it. Next week should see the arrival of new tires - WTB Prowler MX Race 2.5 front and WTB Prowler XT Race 2.35 rear - and various peripheral bits.

Hopefully I'll have a rideable bike back in my hot little hands by Friday afternoon, just in time for the weekend, at which point I'll assail you with more pictures and details of the build and maiden voyage. Quick note - my buddy's Kona Coiler weighs in at about 34 lbs and my bike is noticeably heavier thus far. I'll post up a final weight when it's completely finished next week.

I haven't even ridden it yet but I LOVE this bike!

Still need to replace the rear wheel, both tires, brakes and possibly stem/bars, but it's rideable! Went for a 5-hour maiden voyage today all around Golden Gate Park and while it still needs a bit of dialing in, it flat rips. Currently it's almost exactly 40lbs - we'll see how that changes as the new wheel, brakes, etc. find their appropriate perches, but it's just fine with me at this weight. I like having a little meat on the bones. :thumbsup:

It's having a bit of trouble shifting on the front cogs and LBS said "it's a weird frame, we can't get it dialed in any better than that" which I thought was odd. I'm running a Deore front d with Shimano Mega 9 Rapidfires and Truvativ Firex 3.3 crank - is anyone else having front shifting issues? If yours shifts well what are you running?

More to follow when she's complete in a week or so.
