I live in S.W. Wisconsin and one of my friends lives in Alpena Michigan and we were wondering if there are any awesome trails up there. We prefer technical trails with lots of singletrack and lots of tech sections. Anything in the U.P. or northern Michigan fit that bill?

Around Houghton/Hancock and Marquette are some great trails. In Hancock check out the Masto Hito and Great Oaks trails, in Houghton check out the Tech Trails. If you want to head up to Copper Harbor the Red Trail is very technical. Stop into the local shops an ask, they will point you in the right direction - Downwind Sports in Marquette and Houghton, Keweenaw Adventure in Copper Harbor.

yeah, the copper country is by far the best. i consider myself lucky that i go to mtu up here and can ride these trails whenever i want. copper harbor is absolutely the best, but you should also check out churning rapids at the back end of maasto (west of hancock). another shop (the best one) that you should check out is cross country sports in calumet, but i'm a little biased. just do yourself a favor and come up here.

There are also good trails around Marquette too. Harlow and Carp river ( could get lost back in there) to name a couple. Also Bruno's run in Munising is good.

Keep in mind that right now there is more snow on the ground then there was in Feb.

Marquette is definetaly the place to be in the UP. Rated in the the top5 places to liveand ride in the US by BIKE Magazine in June01- ranked up there w/CrestedButte SantaCruz and Moab. There is a huge freeride scene here, a lot of Northshore style stuff and cliff drops, also everything from techXC sections to fast fire roads too. It will flip your lid, trust me. There are soo many trails it is easy to get lost though, check out Downwindsports or Lakeshore Bike and they will help you out. Downwind has excellent group rides every thurs in the summer. Copper Country will blow your mind too. Both have excellent backdrops of the Superior lakeshore. If youre coming through Marquette get a hold of me my Name is Dave and my email is dhoganso@nmu.edu - I'm always looking for someone to ride with.
Hey Peehead and Closed Loop- we should get together for a ride sometime. I live in Marquette- currnently attending NMU.
