This is a cross post to the CO Front Range forum.
Readers Digest Version:
It's time for a new management plan for the Left Hand Canyon OHV area just north of Boulder, Colorado (Roosevelt NF). In the past decades, OHV use has really degraded the area by trashing existing roads and pristine meadows with all sorts of social trails and social misconduct. In the last few years, though, the Jeep and Moto clubs have banded together to secure a $250k grant to help restore wildlife habitat and restore vegetation. The area has come a long way in the last couple of years.
Now, the new Management Plan could really shake things up. We (cyclists) aren't out to oust the motorized guys, but we could see some real gains in mountain bike opportunities near Boulder. Those of you familiar with Boulder know that the mtb opportunities this close to town are not bountiful... Anyway, the area is mostly very steep terrain with lots of Jeep roads and small bits of fragmented singletrack.
We are lobbying for more sustainable singletrack, more bike opportunities, etc. The environmentalists have called out the big guns and they want everything out of the area except for hiking boots. This is in the backyard of IMBA, but they choose to ignore their backyard and focus on more national issues, preferring to funnel items like this thru their regional and local clubs.
That's it in a nutshell. Write letters, do whatever you can. The mountain bikers of the Peoples Republic of Boulder appreciate it. Thanks!
