A couple days rentals equals the cost of bringing your bike. There are at least five different places to rent a MTB, HT's to FS. There is a variety of trails, the Kula state forest (Poli Poli) offers the most reliable conditions. There is lots of other places to "explore". Convenience to where you are staying is a factor also. Kihei/Wailea is pretty bleak trail wise, Lahaina, Kaanapali, Kapalua side has alot to offer thanks to abandoned sugar cane and pineapple fields. We'll keep in touch and get you out there somehow. Eric Debaser 02-02-2005, 10:53 AM I seem to remember there being some advise on the colorado front range forum, of all places... someone used to live there? airwreck 02-02-2005, 11:00 AM I seem to remember there being some advise on the colorado front range forum, of all places... someone used to live there? I lived in Colorado '62 to '88, been here on Maui ever since. Folks are still up in Fraser, had a great trip there last summer. http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=44317 billybobzia 02-02-2005, 04:29 PM thanks for the reply, we will be staying in makawao for the first part of the trip and then headed over to the north side...probably won't bring my bike (boo hoo), but with kids and stuff it would be easier to rent for a couple of days...looking forward to checking it out... Thespian 02-15-2005, 11:22 AM I'm interested in doing some mountain biking (not road). I am a weekly rider from the east coast. Technical riding is what I'm after but I'll admit I'm not launching 6 footers or anything like that. Just solid xc with some nice tech stuff thrown in. I'm in the Kaapalani area but do have a rental car. airwreck 02-15-2005, 11:36 AM I'm interested in doing some mountain biking (not road). I am a weekly rider from the east coast. Believe it or not the Kaanapali side seems a world away to those of us on the north shore, figure an hour to an hour plus drive time to get up the mountain to ride from there. We'd enjoy having you join us. Here is an email that circulated recently, I'll get you this guys contact info and I'm sure they'd love to have you join them. I've heard they like to hammer. Lahaina MTB Group Ride (Saturday Feb 12th). Steve Fisher emailed and asked if I could get the word out about an upcoming informal Westside MTB ride . Steve has in the past organized mountain bike rides starting from his home in Lahaina, and once again is planning another ride Sat., Feb. the 12th, at 9:00AM. This will be a three hour ride, steep uphills and steep downhills, geared for intermediate to expert riders. See you soon, Eric whodaphuck 02-15-2005, 09:00 PM Hey Thes, Drop me a PM and I'll let you know my schedule for riding on the other side of the island. See you soon, Eric er, hey Eric, that was last Saturday and probably got rained on... if you bring lights, tho, and would like to ride Thursday nights..... airwreck 02-15-2005, 11:13 PM er, hey Eric, that was last Saturday and probably got rained on... if you bring lights, tho, and would like to ride Thursday nights..... hey, are you the crusty old xc guy? :p airwreck 02-15-2005, 11:31 PM This website should answer all your questions ??? honestly, for thorough and unbiased information regarding bicycling on the island of Maui http://www.mauibicyclealliance.org is just a bit more comprehensive. But of course nothing compares to MTBR. :D rockwool 02-16-2005, 09:56 AM I was just there last wednesday and Paw at Crater was awesome. I rented a Kona Kickapoo from him and he pointed me in the right direction for a great trail ride. I think anyone who meets this dude will appreciate the love he has for our sport. If I was going back today I would want to check out the DH run on a big bike. The XC option is fairly high elevation, techy and steep, lung busting for my midwestern arse, but I loved it. I wish I would have had more time to check out more trails, but I was travelling with mi familia (4mos baby, 22mos toddler, GMA, GPA, Wifey) so ride time was limited. If I had a bike box, and was travelling solo, maybe I would bring a personal rig...but renting and bringing your own helmet/shoes/pedals/pack/tools eliminates a lot of hassle.
