Well I finally built up my new Knolly V-Tach frame. After nearly two months of debate, pondering, research and incessant questions (thanks Noel) I've got the bike built up and it's un - be - lievable.

First off, it was far and away the easiest build I've ever done. I've had the pleasure and the pain of building up some of the so-called "best handbuilts" ever and not one of them has come close to this level of quality. No files, no drills, no dremels or files. The parts slid into place as if they were pulled there by magnets. This speaks volumes to the quality of construction, high tolerances and exquisite design. My Turner was the only bike that ever came close to this.

I built it up with the classic Knolly kit: SRAM X9, 321/Hugi wheels, Diabolus and E13 everything. I rounded out the package with Saint brakes and a 2001 Monster T. Wicked.

After one ride I can only say that I'm very impressed. It's funny that we always compare bikes by scrutinizing details like geometry, hype, colour, etc. But what really sets great bikes apart is when they are so much more than these things. Turner, Intense, Seven, Independent Fabrication... companies like this build experience and some type of magic into the bikes. And people who know... know how good it is. These bikes build better, fix better, ride better. They are better. And the VTach easily falls into this level of pedigree.

I think the Monster T might be a little overkill these days but we'll see if one of the new lighter forks will perform as well. I think a more refined fork is in order for a more refined bike....

My first ride was a quick jaunt up Fromme to seat all the parts, stretch cables, etc. And I wasn't disappointed. This bike pedals! The 5th is working so well that I cranked up in a 36T with no problem. This bike definitely wants to be ridden hard but with precision. This build has much lighter wheels than my last bike and it's also a lot more stable. There is definitely a curve involved for me to find the sweet spot. But I got glimpses of it yesterday and I can't wait. This is the right tool for taking everything to the next level. Can't wait for Whistler!!

about quality and fit. The only problem I have had is that the dog ate my Evil idler arm roller during the bike build, a new one is on the way from Evil.

I stuck on a lighter Sherman slider 7" fork @ 6.7 pounds or so; I'm on a large frame, e me if you want to try the fork/bike out. I'm still trying to dial it (SPV valving) in, I've got bob now, but I'm used to that from my old Super T.

The bike may be the death of me, I get really railing until realize I'm going way too fast. Never have I had a bike where all I have to worry about is the speed...the bike takes care of all the trail stuff. Well, except trees and major rocks.

Is that bike the frost green one?

You gonna follow the dog around the house with a little baggie?

Jim - I would love to take a spin on your bike. We should do a shuttle sometime and swap bikes a bit. I'm considering a Sherman and it would be great to get a taste.... yours is a 2005?

Mine's the matte black. I haven't had any problems with my guide. It's a little out of adjustment but nothing serious. Just a tiny bit of rubbing when the bike is sagged.

it needs some fine tuning, I hope to dial it soon. I live on Bowen Island but get over to the mainland with some regularity.

I have been riding it, just after each ride it gets cleaned and placed by the warm fireplace. I will admit that the riding is taking second priority behind getting my karts ready for race season though.

I remember putting yours together, I accidently put a scratch along the top tube. Dont worry, the decals covered it up........ :D

Do you have all your parts to build it up?

don't let yer dog near the Evil idler roller, it's a lovely flavored soft robber. My dog thought it was great!

You are simply gonna love the bike, Sean. Jim

TJ, if you didn't scratch it all the way down to the metal, please go try again! I don't want any halfway-done stuff on that bike! :D

Jim, I received my Go-Ride lowrider bottom crown/steer tube 2 weeks ago and that alone has me wanting to ride the V-Tach. now with your and TJ's pics on here, I may have to go get a sedative to put me to rest until my own arrives.

thanks for the heads-up on the idler roller. my dog likes such chewy things too. :D
