Part of the problem is that you are in the middle of nowhere!

A little 8 - 12 hour drive out to the Devil's Tower land is more than peanuts for those of us who don't live in the greater Black Hills area. With the price of gas over $2 per gal, some of us would have to pony up $135 - $150 in gas alone just to get out there and back. Not to mention entry fee, food, shelter, snacks, blah, blah, blah....

Hey, you want to increase your rider base for the races? Toss in a category for those who travel 500+ miles with cash prizes for the top 3 in that category to help melt the frozen credit card charge from all that gas - and we'll be there. :p

Otherwise - we gotta race local and save on gas.

I would certainly entertain the idea for 500+ miles for prizes but I have a limited budget to work with. I simply put this out for those that want to come, visit us, enjoy singletrack, and have generally a good time.

This race was put on years ago by another group for about 10 yrs, whom have after putting it on simply wore out, the last attendace was 360 people...and the word was this was the best event in the Black Hills. I hope to get that word too. :D

Getting sponsorship was difficult in such a small town. I enlisted the help of the local kids members who are addicted to Mtn Biking to go out and solict sponsorship, and we raised around 2k...I am very proud of them.. :D :D :D This race is for my community, the kids and the assocaition, which I strive to make for bettering my community and the assocaition. We want more riders, and want more trails and this is our fundraiser. We use our monies to better the community through our local bike rode and group rides which we we will use the monies for gas, entry fees, trail tools etc..etc...We are registered non-profit corp in wy.

I will certiantly look at cash prizes and there may still be some...but I have to have entrants...Oh Gas currently for regular unleaded is $2.05/gal  ..

I car pooled to the Laramie enduro and split the costs among us. And we will sponsor a rider for the Enduro this year, he was major sponsor go getter and quickly becoming a fanastic rider... :p

Sorry for the rant... Just thought I would let ya know what we are doing..

No rant perceived, Haroow. I understand your position and believe me - hope your event goes off without a hitch and is a big success. Kudos to you and your team of fundraiser/sponsorship seekers for getting things so well organized. It sounds like a lot better than the average local race.

I guess I was just commenting on what might be holding back a plethora of responses - at least in this thread for those of us who are not racing well enough to win the $$$ and just are participants for personal challenge and fun. I would really love to drive out and do the XC race on the 12th. I was just in the area between May 5th - 18th and in fact was through Sundance the day after 12 inches of snow fell in the hills region. The group I was with hiked around D.T. and stopped at the rest area in Sundance. It's a beautiful area and I would love to try some riding in the Bear Lodge region since I have never ridden there. I'll have to see what I can do to get "permission" from the significant other. Still - it's a long drive over that prairie west of the river at Chamberlain.... :o

Yeah the snow...We had major trail damage, trees everywhere in the trail but the FS is cleaning up as I write this....I had the pheunomonia (SP) that week.. it wiped me out but I recooped and have been riding ever since albeit 20 pounds lighter...Not the way to lose weight...but I lost it none the less and enjoying better riding...

If nothing else get your buddies together and wife and make trip of it...She needs a vacation right??? Take her to Rushmore etc. the caves etc...

..There is Mt View Campground below my house, a FS Campground a mile above my house, and the hotel room rates in town are really decent.

TAlk to ya later, hope your climb wasn't ruined...

THese are the medals/jewlery to be won on Sunday. The mens is key chain and it has the black pyrite gold paw and then the Pink gemstone is in the Womens Necklace. They were custom made bya silversmith here in town... check our website for better pictures. In all reality they need to be seen in person to see the beauty of the tarnish and stones. They will be given out 1-3 in all classes B,I,E, BB, mens and women. cool huh.. the teeth are beveled also...and count them...They are made from sterling silver.......

Let us know how the 2 day event went for you....

Boy, I wish I could have driven all the way out to participate. Baseball playoffs, a daughter's birthday and the distance didn't allow it. Maybe next year.

The events for both days was great despite weather, rain, mud, and misdirection by a volunteer. :p ...

Ya know the ride was probably described as epic adventure/challenge.. :D . I heard stories of the mud, the rain, etcc... the drivetrain attrition....

I was lucky to have volunteers along the course with good cameras and they took photos.. some have still not arrived yet...I have linked them to kodak gallery on the web, i will note the photos that were taken the first day were where the dowhill xc course was ending and it was beautiful day on Sat... but sunday in the first photos ha "rain, mud, Cool temps" I think was quit unbearable..... :D those latter through the meadows- photos were taken by a pro photog that volunteered cause his son was in the race....

It was hard work for the five officers of the assoc.. to do it, but the volunteeers all if not mainly EMS on the course and the non offciers who raced and volunteered were great.. Lots of kids recieved community hours...I think ya missed a good time...

We will learn from our mistakes, and it will just even better from here on out... ;)
