There used to be a Fisher dealer right on campus, but I believe they are no longer there. Two great shops within driving distance are Vernon Cycle, and The Bike Shop in downtown Manchester.
As for trails, you are very lucky. There is an amazing stretch called the Nipmuck trail which passes right through campus. If you're into XC riding you'll be in heaven, unfortunately it is a little light in freeriding content. To find the trail ride up to Towers and onto Horsebarn Hill road. About a quarter mile on the left there will be some fields with a dirt road. Follow the dirt road, which will eventually blend into the field and into the trees. Once you find the trail you will be blessed with a wonderful 3/4ish of a mile tight downhill. At the bottom you can go left or right. Whichever way you choose, there is unlimited riding. My favorite was to go right and into, and around Mansfield Hollow. It is very easy to get 30+ mile rides down here.
Enjoy. By the way, what are you studying?

Jisch 01-17-2005, 11:44 AM Shenipsit Forest in Ellington/Somers is perhaps some of the closest technical riding, also Case Mt in Glastonbury. Both are probably less than a half hour from campus. Some FR there, but not much.
Check out bikerag.com for a pretty complete listing of CT mountain biking. The maps are barely useful, but descriptions and photos are great.
PM me if you'd like a tour of either of those places mentioned.

well then i should know you. i'm finishing up my thesis this semester. just today i saw a gary fisher tied up outside, probably yours. anyway there is a ton of great riding here. unfortunately i'm a gimp right now and will be for atleast 5-6 more weeks (wrist injury). i'd be glad to show you the trails when i'm good again.
i'm in the dynamics and vibratiopns lab. just come by and knock.
Handlebarsfsr 01-28-2005, 06:12 PM im up at uconn too, id be glad to show you around once there isnt a foot of snow on the ground. if anyone wants to ride now, i go up to the indoor bmx track in westfield mass (near springfield, a little over an hour from campus). www.baystateindoorbmx.com. if anyone is interested in checking it out, my aim is handlebarsfsr and we could set up a group thing or whatever. otherwise ill see you around campus.
Check out some of the trails in Mansfield as well. Mansfield Hollow and schoolhouse brook trails are fun and you can do them quickly after classes and whatnot.
Also - pay a visit to Scott's Cyclery in Willimantic. They carry Trek, Fisher, and Giant and they also have a whole slew of old school parts, frames, bikes and gear. It's just a cool shop to visit and when you go there ask for Scott the owner - he's a pretty cool guy. Although he should mark down some of his retro stuff a little bit.
You should also check out the trails at Case Mountain and definitely pay that visit to http://www.bikerag.com for more information on the riding scene in and aroud CT, MA, NY, etc. etc.
Definitely hit Shenipsit (sometimes referred to as Soapstone, MTN) as Jisch suggested. Good stuff and lots of it in there and a great view from the observation tower.
Oh yeah and if you do want to make a trek out to ride the W. Hartford Reservoir - shoot me a PM or find me at AOL as ctrider25 - I'd be happy to show you around. I work at the UConn Health Center which is just a few miles down the road from the Reservoir and ride there frequently.
