I replaced my hand-held GPS (Garmin Extrex Vista) with a Garmin 60 CS model. The old one's reception would cut out with any overhead tree cover. I got to try the 60 CS today, after hearing it had good reception. I took it to an area density covered with Washington pine trees. It never lost reception during the ride in the netting of my camelbak. This is one of the few places I had available to ride, due to snow cover everywhere else, however the trees protect these trails pretty well. Only 28 degrees when I finished, but a sunny day and a great day to ride after not being on the bike for the past 8 days due to the weather.

Next Day... Took the GPS to Green Mountain, density forested. I heard the GPS beeped twice during the ride meaning, it probably lost satellite reception for a short time during the ride, however the track marks were laid out evenly (bottom picture). This is my favorite ride on GM (Up Gold Creek, Down Beaver Pond and out Plummer), basically all up and then all down... Using a Prophet today, in the mixed snow. Temperature was around 28 making for a rock hard trail that felt like pavement at times.

I've got an Etrex, it lost the signal in any trees. I gave it to me wife to use. I might have to look at the new models if they've improved that much.

What lake is that?

I guess for $500 it outta work well. Well mapped - very cool, but a bit pricey for me:(
Are there any moderately priced units that work well?.....guessing not......

That's why many people used the Magellan models... they seem to hold the signal under tree cover quite a bit better. Glad to see Garmin is catching up..... I have a Garmin and a Magellan btw.

Garmin has the GPS 60 shipping at the end of the month. b&w screen but pretty much the same otherwise and under $190. They can use an external antenna, too.
