i have a mongoose pathfinder, supposed to retail about 600 bucks. i hope its at least middle of the line. if anyone knows how old it is let me know. i am fairly new to the sport, since only mid december and have only gone a few rides. i like to xc and ive tried a little dh, but i took a major fall and would like to find some people to ride with. so i can learn a little more. looking for friends how can help me with techniques and lingo, and if i can find some people to ride with that would be awsome. i know its not really biking season but i love the sport and will continue to ride. thanks
i know the chain has some rust, i went on a nice ride a few days ago and im going to clean it tonight

It's my winter/beater bike. A bit dirty from my ride today. It started out as a frame that got a bunch of used "hand-me-down" parts. But I really like riding it so I always have an excuse to buy new parts for my other bikes so a "not-so-used" part can be passed down to this frame. I actually find myself riding this bike even in the summer.

Now it's got Hayes hydros 8" in front, 6 " in back, X-7/Sram 9.0 drive train, the last version of the XT 8 speed cranks, FSA Extreme headset, White Brothers AT-3 coil 90 mm fork, Onza bar ends, DT/Hugi front wheel and a Bontrager rear wheel with a SRAM cassette, Time ATAC pedals, XTR front derailler, and Fox AVA float rear shock.

I just got a set of new bushings (FREE) from Mongoose and it rides like new again. It's strayed a bit from the beater bike concept I started with.

Best part is, I still get the "my gosh he's on a walmart Mongoose" look from a few people as I pass them.

I also have 2 schwinns that I'll post. Both kept alive with the help of the nice folks over there at Pacific bikes. Great customer service so far.

This is my first mtn bike and still my favorite. Ive had it since '99 and has been GREAT and is still in good shape - other than a slight bend to the frame (I took it to plattykill a couple times *!%^#@) haha- my leg still has a scar from it too.

I made a few nice additions to the frame, I swapped out the rear shock for a Cane Creek AD5, put a set of Rolfs on to get my roll on with some nice Kenda Karisma rubber, added LX shifters, LX front der, LX crankset, and an XT rear der. The fork is a Rockshox Jett, but will be swapped out later. I put on a Thomson seatpost with a very comfy WTB Rocket saddle. Amazingly she's under 30 LBS!!!

Looks like you have the seat rails maxed out. Why didnt you get a race face xy post with the 1 inch offset. It would set you where you need to be instead of on the front of the rails where the seat will end up breaken from too much leverage at the back of the rails.

Seat rails hurt when they snap and jab you in the ass through the seat.

Here is my "Mongoose" got it for $200, used it for riding around campus. I am so impressed with this thing because I have beat the living crap out of it and it is basically fine. (UMCP campus, going down steps all day, 3 foot drops max before it bottoms out but it doesn't mind) It has been getting hand-me-down parts from my rockhopper as I upgrade it. I've changed the fork, saddle, tires, rear rim and freewheel, pedals. :D
Oh, it also weighs 32 lbs now. Its pretty damn good for what it is!

Hello All!
I have a issue with my wifes bike, its a Mongoose bought from Sportsmart, model is the Incline, the brake system really blows. I was wondering if anyone has info on upgrading to a Disc Brake system, the fork has the bosses for Disc but the rear doesnt, could I use those adapters sold on the web or could you all recommend something else. I am going to upgrade the wheelset as well. I would just sell this to buy a KHS or Giant but she loves this bike. any and all help is appreciated!

My bike is the newer version of summitlt's bike. Minus those crazy modifications :p . I ripped off the stickers to make it look less cheesy :D It's all stock except for a seatcover and a new rear derailler

Yeah I know it's a cheap $250 cosco bike. It's my only bike and it gets the job done. Never had anything break.

I got it done by someone on here that posted some pics in the DH forum. its actualy anodized not paint. that makes it so that the only original parts on my teocali is the front deralieur and the metal of the frame. every other part on it has been swapped out.

I'm just starting to grow interest in this sport, but have quickly realized that it's expensive. I'm on a tight budget and want to buy a decent bike. I have heard to much bad gouge about Mongoose, but that seems to be all I can afford. Has anyone heard of a Mongoose Blackcomb. Is this a decent bike or should I keep on looking. I just want to be able to keep up with other local riders. GUIDE ME TO RIDING SALVATION!!! :p

I had to start out on a budget, too, so last week I went to Walmart and got a Mongoose XR 250. It's dual suspension, shimano gears, front disc, etc. It's a bit heavy, probably 40 pounds or so, but it's getting me out on the trails at a fraction of the cost until I can upgrade down the road.

Here she is. The pride and joy. There is no way you can find a better bike for the money! The Teocali Super took third in the $2200 bike shootout to specialized and kona. Only the bike only costs $1900 and they listed it for $2200! Oh well, still a great showing for the geese.

I just bought a 1999 (?) NX 7.1, similar to the 7.5 poster earlier but with cheaper components. It has become my project city riding bike as I have a Fisher Cake for heavy duty MTB riding.
I plan to save up and buy a better front fork as it has Rock shock jett c on it which is like riding a pogo stick. Looks pretty cool though, not to much damage to it either.

Man that Blackcomb looks odd !!

I have a bog standard Teocali Comp.

Plans include air shocks all round ( i can't seem to loose weight, so the bike will have to), and Hope Mono M4 brakes to replace the Sole's.

Have to say the bike handles really nice. Especially like the Freedrive system eliminating pedal bob.

Here is my 1993 Mongoose IBOC Comp I acquired several weeks ago. I sure haven't found much information on these bikes. It is outfitted with Shimano LX, DX and XT throughout. 1.5" slicks on it right now. I painted the frame with Rust-oleum "Hammered" Black to give it a bit of a Rat look.

This is my '05 Mongoose Hardluck. I've just spent my whole saturday morning giving it a good service, as well as bolting up my new raceface bashguard! It's all stock apart from the bashguard and the S.D.G Bel-Air FX. It's definitely one of my 'pride and joys'.

It's completely stock right now. I might upgrade to a better front fork and rear shock if I find a good deal on ebay. Other than that, I don't want to put too much money into it. I've ridden it a lot over the past 4 weeks on some good single track. Beginner and Intermediate trails. It's taken a few small drops without problem. It handles the rough terrain well and does a good job sprinting downhill. Climbing is a little rough, due to the weight (about 38lbs) and the crappy shocks. Everything else is working flawlessly!

Just got my new Canaan from Performance. I still have to shorten the front brake line and get everything adjusted. I've already switched out the 110mm stem for a 100mm and installed some old time ATAC pedals. I was surprised to see a 31.6mm seatpost instead of the 27.2mm spec'd on the Mongoose website. Can't wait to ride it this weekend.

I just a review of the 'Team' in a mag in the UK (not sure which). It won the group test. The mag said the freedrive was excellent in the lower travel format and thought the elite might be better than the team as it didn't have the reactive fox fork. I was wondering if you report how the ride went. I like the Teocali but am not sure if I need the extra travel and the weight. This bike has an awesome frame design and looks really well with the silver finish.

I was wondering if you report how the ride went.
Only one ride so far, a 14 mile loop of mostly fireroad climbs and descents on mixed terrain. The bike rides great, no pedal feedback, great traction while climbing, and very stable going downhill. It feels solid, well designed, and has some nice components for the money. The horizontal top tube length is on the long side at 23.5" (med frame) but this works well with a shorter stem to quicken the steering a tad with the slacker than average (in this category) 69.5 deg head angle. BTW, the Mongoose website lists a Fox RP3 and a 27.2mm seat post for this bike. It comes with a Fox RP2 shock and a 31.6mm seat post.

Nothing stock left except the seatpost and BB... got it new in late '95 and it's been my main bike for 12 years (I just finally got a road bike, though). It's had a few stints in mothballs but it's served me well over the years and lately it's been back up and running again.

Ive only heard bad things about the pearl air, try the Marzocchi Roco Air R, its cheap and fits the suspension curve on the teocali very well. Its also RED too, so it matches ur frame well :D

My 04 Wing Comp, It is a nice bike the frame is heavy and strong at the same time, The only weakness are the shocks, I got it new in the box from ebay for $278 last fall. I upgraded rear derailleur to Deor LX and added a front disk brake. For the rides that I do here in PA it is worth the money, It is smooth and it took stood to the roocky trerrain until last week when I blew the rear shock. I am still in the process of getting a new rear shock but I having trouble finding a decent one under $200 since I don't want to put a lot of money in the bike.

What experience are you guys havingwith the Mongoose Wing Comp?

A couple pics of my rig before upgrading some stuff. I plan on totally overhauling the bike piece by piece. I have a set of Titec El Norte (31.8) bars and a Truvativ Hozlefeller stem that should be here tomorrow. I also have a disc brake for the rear that should be here this week. I'll post some pics after I get all that installed. Next on the list? I'm going to replace the shock (maybe with a fox) and the fork... still undecided on which one, but I want 150mm of travel. I'm also going to move to Saint components. Any suggestions let me hear em.

My 04 Wing Comp, It is a nice bike the frame is heavy and strong at the same time, The only weakness are the shocks, I got it new in the box from eBay for $278 last fall. I upgraded rear derailleur to Deor LX and added a front disk brake. For the rides that I do here in PA it is worth the money, It is smooth and it took stood to the rocky terrain until last week when I blew the rear shock. I am still in the process of getting a new rear shock but I having trouble finding a decent one under $200 since I don't want to put a lot of money in the bike.

What experience are you guys having with the Mongoose Wing Comp?

I'll speak for my Wing Comp, as you pointed out the main weakness is the suspension. I replaced my rear shock with a Fox float that I bought from Ebay; that made a world of difference. I have a Rockshox Psylo on the front, not everyones favorite fork, which combined with the rear shock make a decent combo. I don't ride it much these days since I bought a couple of other bikes in the past couple of years but its still a fun ride when I do take it out.

Don't the Rituals have like a stupid-long top tube? Like 23" or something? I can't remember. I'm like 5'8" on a good day, don't think I could handle that, but I like the frame. Why no size options, I ask!?

I have search far and wide for a stores that sell Mongoose Pro bikes. With the exception of one bike that I found at Dick's, no other store online or that I have gone to carries them. Where did you get yours??? Let me know man. BTW nice bike set up.

My bike is Mongoose otero elite 2007. The original rear shock is so bad that i changed it to manitou radium rl (with lockout). Also i changed the stem to 90mm 30 degree Zoom stem, because the original 110mm 5 degree stem was to long for technical use, i didn`t like that! With new stem it also more comfortable doing drops. I think it`s nice bike!

Ahhhh, that sucks! I have an 07 BD3 that I am currently stripping to have custom powdercoated bright candy gold because ON THE WEBSITE the Double's gold color looked a little dull. Looks pretty damn sharp to me!
But I'll be doing some custom touches as well, like gold pearl and red metal flake as well, plus I had custom red foil decals made up for it already.
But yours looks really really good!
Here's mine so far...
Swapped out the air shock for a DHX coil, 06 66RC2X, SunRingle A.D.D. wheelset, Diabolus cranks... pretty basic compared to the last 3 or 4 bikes i've had. And whaddaya know..it's 3 times the fun!

Put a few updates on the bike. Like Coffeegeek, I picked a spare/second frame on EBAY for when this one eventually craps out. If this bike is anything like my old sommet, then I assume the Virtual Pivots behind the BB will wear out first.

The DHX air can is sleeved down (per the Turner forum) which makes it ride much better. There is just enough room for the DHX 5.0 if you take the bottom out knob off after you set it up.

The fork is an All Mountain 150 mm travel. With the steerer tube set at 69 deg, the extra inch of travel up front doesn't seem to throw off the geometry too much.

The seat tube angle is a bit too lax and makes for a down hill friendly cockpit but puts weight a bit too far back to climb in the saddle. As you can see by my pic, my saddle is pushed way forward. It's definitely lighter than my Black Diamond but my BD almost feels nicer to climb on - an it has a super T on the front. my problem might be that these Grand Marquis came with 100/120 mm front forks and I'm using a 150mm fork. I was contemplating using an old Race face XY post but install it backwards to offset forward. Not sure about this.

If I remember, you're using a 7.875 shock correct? this might help a bit with the seat tube ankle AND should raise your BB height about an inch. with the spec'd 7.5 eye to eye shock on the six inch setting, the BB is at 12.5 inches. The DHX definitely killed the bobbing that came in the 6 inch setting with the original fox coil.

I had some fully custom decals made up as I had PLANNED on having it PC'd Gold, but the guy won't call me back. So screw him, the polished frame looks just as sick, just threw all the gold and silver components off my hardtail on the BD3! Thing looks friggin FAST!

I have a 7.5 in shock and I went with the 100mm fork. I think it feels pretty balanced. I was just worried about the bob effect.

Your bike may ride better since I think my GM may be a bit 'choppered' out trying to make it a 6 inch travel bike. I'm moving back to Northern Cal shortly so we'll see how the frame holds up to Downieville and Auburn.

This is how the PanzerGoose ended. From a AM/Trail bike to a AM/FR bike. My mechanic (Dr Spoke in Stockholm) managed to extend the stroke to +6" by tuning in the 5th Element shock. It's a MZ Z1 Fr 1 150mm in the front end and Halo Tornado Wheels. Gear controls, brakes (not discs), cranks and seat clamp, are orginal parts. Nothing else...

Shes going to be burried in a swamp she's concered many times. She has a fatal crack in the top tube. Just in the weld to the head tube. Allmost all the way around.

A Intense 6.6SS is on its way...:)

trailbear are excellent tires, good choice

a 2.5 trailbear up front and a 2.1 fire XC or mythos XC for trail riding has been my setup for alost 8 years. I know there's new and improved tire treads out there but I love this set up, I can predict the rear tire drift, climbing is not as painful since the rear rotational weight is relatively low, and I don't seem to pinch flat as much as I thought I would when I first started using this set up.

Once my last Trailbear is gone, not sure what I'll go with, since it seems I can only find 2.25's on line now.

Any comments on the WING COMP?

this is the bike I got about six months ago, it has done very well.

Had to do some minor adjustments, but you always do on a new bike unless you put it together yourself or at the LBS.

If its new the components should be pretty good. The guy at my bike shop said they were simliar to what they had there, in a higher end, you know, 1000$ and up.

I am very happy. :thumbsup:

I just bought a new 2007 teocali. I've got to say its great to see mongoose really
producing some quality bikes. I remember as a kid being the man because
I had a mongoose BMX while all my friends had huffy's and murray"s. To say
I do'nt wish that had some big name boutique bike would be a lie; but that's only
because way down deep I truly am a ego maniac who wants everyone to oh and
ah over my new ride. But the truth is they would'nt ride any better, last any longer
or make me love the sport any more than I already do. I bought the comp knowing
that I already owned a desent parts group and that I was going to use those parts
(all mountain 3 fork, swinger 6 way coil, cane creek zono rims,Lx external bearing
cranks, and XT drive train). After doing a couple rides with the stock set up I was
pretty impressed. So much so I actually kept a fair amount of the stock parts;
and what I did'nt keep I put on my old frame to use as a spare bike. I am disapointed
in that my swinger coil fit so tightly between the seat towers that I was'nt comfortable
using it or any coil for that matter.Probably for the best. I had a spare manitou
radium RL. That shaved some weight bringing the bike down to 30.5lbs.
I have to say its good to see that people can go out spend $1000 and have a
dependable, capable dual suspension, bike with a great parts kit.

I paid 529.00 for it at my local Performance Bike shop. Unless your bike shop has a good return policy, I would highly recommend you test ride before buying. It would suck if you special order it then end up not liking it. I can tell you this bike has been all fun....:thumbsup:

Here's my 1996 IBOC Pro-SX. I bought the frame from Al's Cycle & Fitness in Medford, OR in 1996. I built it up during the '96-'97 winter.

In December '97 or '98 I removed the Gripshift X-Ray shifters and put XTR M-951 shifters on it. I especially like the Syncros Pro Titanium seatpost. The seat stays flexed like crazy due to the XT V-brakes, so I put one of those Shimano carbon brake boosters on it. I figured the 63mm '97 Judy SL could use on too. The wheelset is made up of Mavic 217 rims, White Industries hubs, and 15g straight spokes.

I loved that bike when I originally put it together. It sits in the garage now, minus a lot of parts. I'd like to build it back up as a single speed bike to ride around the neighborhood with my kids.

It's neat that Mongoose makes entry level bikes all the way to pro rigs.

It's a nice bike, Heavyish for all mountain use, but very durable, mine is a custom frame only, as featured with a fox rlc fork , wtb wheels, race face downhill crank, saint brakes and sram x9 twisties. a great climber and descender. the shock setup is very persnickity, it took a while to dial it in perfectly, too little air pressure and it has lots of bobbing, too much pressure and the rebound was too fast even with it fully damped, the tst5 feature of the shock is a joke, but with it turned off, it is very plush..

Can I ask where you got it and what it cost ya for the frame-only? Mongoose doesn't offer it that way, but I know of a shop that will. He's out of ALL non-XC Mongoose bikes right now. Should just save up for the 09 DH rig and a Nugget...

I split the cost with someone looking for a parts kit for a 6.6, It worked to be a good deal for both of us. The stock parts are all top shelf

I think the older ones are good also,it matters what model you got,but the dept. store ones are crap.I remember when I was a kid growing up in the 70's how it was every kids dream to own an Mongoose or Redline BMX(This was before the MTB craze started),now they're all over the place and the names been dragged through the mud because of the dept. store junk.They have a bad stigma attached to them now,but they still make very good bikes.I just bought a '08 Canaan Team frame and I just know someone will have something to say about it,but I don't care because I know it's a good frame

If a bike works and serves the riders purpose how does that make it crap, I have a Mongoose Teocali and I also got a Mongoose Tactic I got on clearance at Kmart for $150 and I can ride any trails on it that I ride the Teocali or your bike for that matter.

If you can't tell the difference between your teo and your BSO (http://www.whycycle.co.uk/buying_your_bike/beware_the_bicycle_shaped_object/) mongoose, that's fine for you, but do me a favor and when the bso breaks dispose of it properly don't abandon it on the side of the trail, I've hauled 3 out of the woods so far this year..

I really like it so far,the FS has really helped my old and brittle bones.If you'd like the list of components let me know and I'll list them.The LBS really did a number on the Mongoose logos on the seat tube,not a huge deal,but still.

Yeah, the IBOC Team-SX and IBOC Pro-SX (Ritchey Logic tubing - 17" weighs in at 3.7 pounds) are just crap frames. yawn :rolleyes:

I wish people would stop ****ing comparing department store bikes to the real deal! Jeezusfuk!! NOT THE SAME THING! It's seriously like comparing caviar to cheese spread. Department store frames are not heat treated, just to split the difference in the most simple form of understanding. They were not designed, tested, then redesigned for maximum performance. They did not undergo heavy test sessions under the asses of pro riders such as Eric Carter, Andrew Cho and Andrew Neethling!
They were designed for the masses of "average americans" who will probably never actually ride the POS and it will do not much more than sit next to the barbecue grill collecting spider webs.
If you seriously "can't tell the difference" between your $150 bike and your $1500 bike...you're

B: An absolute moron who doesn't ride either bike.
C: A handicapped mron who can't ride either.

For some one who can't read you shouldnt call people morons, heres exactly what i wrote,

"If a bike works and serves the riders purpose how does that make it crap, I have a Mongoose Teocali and I also got a Mongoose Tactic I got on clearance at Kmart for $150 and I can ride any trails on it that I ride the Teocali or your bike for that matter."

The Tactic is my ride around the Nieborhood bike because the other one will get stolen where I live no matter how many locks or what locks I use and I cant justify spending another $1000 dollars on a secondary bike. Also the bicycle shaped object stuff is mostly just B.S., I've never seen any one I know have any problems with even barely maintained cheap bikes falling apart and killing them. I'm starting to wonder why I signed up here if this is the kind childish posts that are made, people trolling forums just to tell people their bikes are crap is just plain sad.

Perhaps comparing a $150 to a $1500 bike by "riding around your neighborhood" isn't really worthy of you running your mouth? 90% of the trails I like to ride I would seriously not even advise you trying to run the Teo on. And you're trying to tell me you can ride your WallyWorld Special on these?
I bought an El Cheapo for my wife and ripped the brake bosses off the fork doing a quickie little nose manual for my daughters. They're SHITE.
But whatever! Thanks to those masses of people who buy them, the top line Mongoose stuff is cheap as hell, so keep buyin!

Whos the one runnin his mouth? I remember being call a moron by someone who seems to have trouble reading. As I said before you need to learn to read and grow up. Also if your so positive their such dangerous pieces of crap why would you by one for your wife? Sounds to me you will just say what ever takes to be right. Broke of the Brake bosses ? I find that hard to believe, and if so it sure is hell isnt a common occurance, with probably 90% of the bikes in the world being cheap department store bike if they were as dangerous as all this bike shop propaganda wants us to believe the death rate would be higher than death from cancer.

I'm well aware the quality of the bikes isn't as high and they are usually way heavier than bike shop bikes but they are not death traps if assembled by someone that knows what they are doing. I have done plenty of XC riding on cheap bikes and never had any issues, Ive also done the same on good bikes that made it easier because they were lighter, had a smoother rides if they had suspenson, shifting didnt need adjusting as often, and required less maintanence, I bought the better bike for lighter wieght and better suspention and for jumping. Anyhow this all I got to say on this, say what ever you want I dont plan to respond but im sure you will want to get in the last word any way.

Who needs to grow up now? This isn't a game of "last word" this is about people like you blabbering on about these $100 bikes being able to do what engineered bikes can do. It's bad enough having an inexperienced rider on a trail that's even slightly outside their skill level, the last thing they need to think is that their rig is up to the task when it's the only thing they're most likely relying on to get them through.

And as for your completely retarded question about a POS bike for my wife...? Because she's one of the masses that let's it sit against the barbecue grill all summer long. All she needs it to do is keep up with my 4 year old on training wheels every saturday for 20 minutes. And I barely trust it to do that. Which is why my "wife" is "getting" a Khyber...that happens to be about my size. ;)

Made simple: If all bikes were created equal there wouldn't be $6000 bikes and $100 bikes. What's that old saying..."You don't bring a knife to a gun fight." But perhaps in-town paved bike trails don't quite fall in the "gun fight" category, now do they?

Great choice with the Amasa,I think it's a great deal compared to some of the bigger names out there and Mongoose has done a great job lately with their bikes.

Please do post pictures of it when you get it,I love seeing other riders bikes!

Well here it finally is. It came in yesterday and I went and picked it up, took it for a quick ride at Performance Bike and then went for about a half an hour ride last night. I must say that I am glad I chose this over the Gary Fisher Piranha. The Mongoose feels more comfortable and I just couldn't convince myself to buy the GF even though they were the same price.

All the components are Shimano Deore except the RD which is XT and the brakes which are something else which I can't remember off the top of my head but they are hydrolic. I love the wheels too, they are very light.

Only changes so far are the small seat bag and the LED taillight that you can see in the pics. I also have a red Lizard Skins chain stay on order as well.
