View Full Version : Urban/Guinness - Friday!
DmofoT 02-18-2004, 01:46 PM It's that time of year again, where Guinness hosts an around the world toast to itself. Last year, the toast coincided with the MORE winter party and we were able to get a nice group out afterwards.
This year I'd like to do it in style. Do an urban ride in and around the Arlington/Roslyn/DC area at 7:00 PM, Friday, Feb.20, ride for no more than 2 hours, and then head to Ireland's Four Courts where the Guinness flows like a river.
We can use my house as a staging point since it's only a 5 minute bike ride from the Four Courts. So if your interested in some easy go fun riding and drinking, or just riding, or well you know...just drinking - then come on out! Who's with me?

voodoo-1 02-18-2004, 08:07 PM much better than those silly over the river and through the woods ones everyone always talks about. Too bad my lungs are only working at half speed this past month.
voodoo-1 (stupid no good virus messing me up. . .going away, then coming back worse)

Well that's the idea!
For people who just want to drink, we can meet at the Four Courts - http://www.irelandsfourcourts.com/ - and it's located at 2051 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia 22201.
People who just want to drink should probably get there around 8:30-9:00 PM (earlier if you really like to drink, ha) and grab some seats if there are any available or put a name down on a list. The toast goes down at 10:00 PM.
For those interested in riding before hand, you have 2 choices:
1) Meet at my house (549 N. Piedmont St., Arlington, VA, 22203) at 7:00 PM and we ride out from there.
2) Meet up with the ride after it's left my house by calling my cell (703.899.7466) and finding out where we are.
When I say "urban", I don't mean simply riding around the streets and paved paths. Sure there will be some of that, but that will be so we can get from place to place. "Places" are things like the massive amount of steps at Courthouse or the concrete/dirt waves next to the Burger King in Roslyn (which is the MOST FUN) or the corner park down the street that is filled with fun rocks and steps. There is pretty much something for all levels of riders. You can go easy and take in the sites as we move from place to place (like the building across from the waves - the windows move in the wind like water!) or you can try
out some more fun stuff, really up to the individual.
So does that answer any questions? Regardless of whether your just drinking, just riding, or doing both, it would be nice to get a headcount. I've got a few emails here and there so I'm starting to piece it together now.

Well I guess some sort of write-up should be done. I took a couple of pics and video, but I don't think a single one turned out because of the darkness and because everytime I would go to take a pic, the camera would take 15 sec. to focus and finally take the picture, which by that point was pointed at my feet...
Let's see - so 6 people showed up to my house right around 7:00pm. A few of us started the party a little early with some Old Dominion Winter Brew. The temps were perfect for a night ride as we set off from the Ballston area. We headed down to the Clarendon Metro where we were supposed to pick up another guy. Time for stop #1 across the street from the metro where small concrete barriers made for some fun hopping to get us warmed up. After several phone calls from other peeps on their way, we decided to move on.
Stop #2 was the Courthouse area. This provided us with several flights of steps, which are batched together in different configurations. To the side of the sets of stairs were bigger concrete steps (1 step for each set of stairs). Each step was probably a maximum of 2 feet, maybe less. There was also a ramp with tight turns to test your slow balance. At this point we gained 3 more people that were trying to catch up with us.
With the 9 of us all together now, we set off for the Roslyn area. On the way we had our first and only mechanical, a simple flat tire. We made it to the two rolling concrete waves that are filled with dirt in between. This was fun! Most people were satisfied with getting a couple inches of air, but a couple of people took it to the next step, trying to complete 360's and whatnot.
We then moved over a half block to the rock park, which has more steps and the whole small park is lined with a rock wall. Also there are random rocks to ride around in the middle of the park. Some people practiced riding up the steps, while others rode down, while still others chose to ride down the rock/dirt wall, which rewarded the rider with a little huck at the end.
At this point we started to split up. A couple of people headed for the bar, one left for home, and the rest crossed the street and over to Gateway Park. Evidently this is where a bunch of the urban riders get together on Thursdays to practice skills. We only spent 5 minutes here as we had to make the climb out of Roslyn, which conveniently ends at the Four Courts bar/restaurant.
Other than the people who were riding, I think we had 3 people show up just to drink. It was pretty crowded as the bar area is really narrow, so we blocked off a section for ourselves to stand and commenced drinking. So of us took it easy, while others decided to get stinking drunk. Pictures were taken. Thought the toast was at 10:00pm, turns out to be 11:00pm. No big deal, just an hour longer for drinking. The bar hosted Guinness trivia and we were able to bring home a t-shirt and hat for getting one of the questions before anyone else. After the toast, people started heading home. In the end there was 2 of us left and we balled out, but not before a quick Irish Car Bomb to top the night off. Let's just say the ride back to my house was fun to say the least...

What is "balling out"? Is this what two loving men do to each other? Maybe it's a good thing I left earlier...

You know, I had to ball out, or bounce, why you tripping yo?
Aight, I had time to take the pics off the camera at lunch and like I thought, they all suck. But there are a few from outside that are somewhat viewable and there are also a few from the bar scene.
Damn camera!

Allroy 02-24-2004, 05:34 PM they are the worst shots I have ever seen! Maybe you were to busy playing with your balls instead of taking pictures, or Drevils, either way...

Yo DT!
I've still got your longsleeve T and your gloves. I stumbled out of the bar and forgot that you had given them to me. Still got your Camelback also. Why don't you leave me any fancy crap like your heart rate monitor so I can sell it on Ebay?
Your pal,
Chance
Drewdane 02-25-2004, 06:55 AM Hey Chance, I think we met at the first MORE Sunday Accotink ride - you had a singlespeed? Between the holidays, cancellations, and the weather, I never made it to another one, and now it appears they fell by the wayside. Did Tom ever host another one?

drew,
word, you had the marin, right? i think tom hosted like one other ride, but i was on shift that sunday and couldn't make it to that one and then he slipped on ice and was out of commission for awhile. since wakefield has been a swamp for months, i think he's probably just going to wait until spring to start em' up again. do you ever have time to ride during the week? since i do shiftwork, its like prime time for riding for me and we could hook up for some rides.

Yup, I was the slow guy on the Marin. I'm a desk monkey, and I've got the kids in the evenings 'til my wife gets home, so weekends are pretty much my only riding time. We should try to hook up next time you have a weekend!

LOL! I almost thought that was my post for a second. That always seems to be my line :) Have you tried any night riding? I just started this year and have had a blast with it. Well, until last week when I fell down a ravine but that was kind of fun anyway.
