View Full Version : Knolly update (bad)
006_007 11-21-2004, 12:50 AM This has been mentioned over in DH thought I would post it in here as well.
A good friend of ours, Noel Buckley of Knolly Bikes had a bad crash on upper oilcan today. Sounds like the group he was riding with was prepared and made the most out of a bad situation.
Heal up fast Noel.

"Just got home from the Hospital
Yeowch, I bet that hurt. Anyways, Noel is doing not bad all things considered (though not good either). It is definately a serious injury. He has a spiral fracture of the left tibia (fibula is broken as well). The surgery will be done first thing tomorrow morning (by the same surgeon who worked on his arm which he also broke on Upper Oilcan over 3 years ago). The x-rays were not too pretty.
It was quite a production to keep him from going into shock and to get him out. Thanks to all who helped with first aid, supplying those space blankets, lighting small fires to keep him warm, etc. It is always great to see how much support total strangers can provide. Also huge props to the ambulance service and the DNVFD and North Shore Search and Rescue. It would have been a nightmare to get him out without their professional help.

Lucky 11-22-2004, 06:10 AM Deja vu, all over again.
Hope this one heals a lot faster than the arm! Good luck, dude!

Tarpon 11-22-2004, 07:15 AM Here's to a full recovery.
Any word on where on UOC he crashed?
screampint 11-22-2004, 07:56 AM Yeouch!
I agree with rt, you need to take up traffic sports a la "Frogger." It would be safer. Thanks to all the folks that helped him out. Hopefully you will heal quickly enough for your spring visit. Best of luck.

He rode the skinny that leads to the huge stump and feeds into the steep ladder. Rode the stunt okay, but apparently got all squirrelly on the rocky runout bit.

We feel really bad for you Noel. Get well soon
Brodiegrrl 11-22-2004, 04:39 PM lee and I just came back from visiting him in the hospital.
His spirits are good. He will have a lot of time now to work on the Knollybikes!
He should be road riding by the time ski season is over. Which he'll miss as well.
CraigH 11-22-2004, 04:42 PM Thanks for the update!
shabadu 11-22-2004, 04:43 PM Aaaaargh. This was some bad news to see, Noel. It was super cool to run into you and Kira in Vegas....seeing the scar in your arm....then this?! Shitty.
Drink milk, heal quick, hopefully we'll get to pedal around a bit next summer, cuz I've got a taste of BC and I need more!
Healing vibes coming your way.

006_007 11-22-2004, 10:03 PM Just got back from the hospital,
Noel is in amazingly good spirits, has a good supply of chocolate goods and mens magazines, and claims to be feeling relatively small amounts of pain even though he is not currently taking any sort of pain medication. He even plans to be working on the bikes again by Wed!
He was even on his feet as I left (with the aid of crutches).
We will probably be hearing from the man himself in the next few days possibly with some spy photos.........

AlanB 11-22-2004, 10:33 PM No morphine? What's the point in breaking something if you can't get the good stuff?
Good to hear that Noel is doing well. I just hope his wife can keep him off the bike until he's completely healed. I recommend removing all seats and pedals and locking them up until he's got Dr's approval to ride. (Stationary bikes excepted.)
Heal well, Noel. And start taking calcium suppliments.

Hey :)
Well - this message is from the wife ...(is that like from the crypt?) Thank you for all the good wishes/vibes and the visitors - that's why he's been in good spirits!! (that and I hear he had two cute babes snuggling up to keep him warm waiting to be rescued :)
tell you what tho'- if any of you guys know Noel - you know he's stubborn - which serves him well (tolerates no compromise with his bikes) and occasionally not so well...translation: not much influence from the wife !!
He does listen to his surgeon though who happens to be the same one who did first 3 surgeries...There were some concerns they could not find a plate long enough and would have to delay repair but that fortunately did not occur as they found a Noel size plate.
We still do not know the full extend of the injury to the knee. It is sooo swollen right now, even if they assessed the damage, he could not undergo any repair yet. The fracture started at the tibial plateau (in the joint) and may have damage the tibial intraarticular cartilage as well as an ACL tear...it then travelled mid tibia to finish in a spiral at the distal third of the tibia. Nasty fracture....so - if he's lucky - soft tissue swelling that doens't require a 2nd surgery but likely will.
I'm sure he'll be happy to be back to internet access in the next few days and give you all his updates.
Again - thank you all for your support. I know it means a lot to him :)

Mellow Yellow 11-23-2004, 08:16 AM it's scary to think that one of the best riders I know has had two very bad injuries. I'm sending "get well soon" vibes your way!
