I was thinking about a day trip from Houston and was wondering if anybody has written Huntsville State Park in the past year or so? Is it worth riding?

Huntsville is the closest thing to where I live, it is my favorite in the Houston area. Woody single track with enough acends to make you breathe hard. 1 lap typically takes me 45-50 minutes, but I seldom have legs for more than two laps. Unless you're snobby about your trails, you'll like it.

Its fast, good and worth the trip. Watch out for hikers. First time I rode it I couldn't find a good route, second time was a little better. About 1/2 beg-int. level single track and 1/2 fireroad. A few decent climbs and drops but not dramatic. Good place to take a newbie. I manage about a 10 mile loop with minor repeats. Nothing difficult and the fresh air (compared to Houston) is the best.

Thanks, I may have to give it a try. I usually head to Rocky Hill Ranch when I shoot for a road trip, but I've been looking for something a little closer for quick trips.

Do they close it after heavy rains? I typically ride Memorial Park or the Ant hills and Memorials been closed for a few weeks and last weekend the Ant Hills was still in the bayou.

the trails have been ridable last and one before last weekends. This is the best trail within 50 mi radius of Houston. Drains OK too. I ride it on SS 35x17 and do 3 laps - good workout, but it is not very technical.

Huntsville and Double Lake are great venues. Huntsville gets the nod for slightly more challenging riding but still non-tech. However if you get to go to an event go to Double Lake--Keith Porter and gang knows how to put on a great MTB fest.
