View Full Version : Titanium Bolts
Phantomtracer 01-13-2004, 12:32 PM Anyone know where I can get titanium bolts to replace the ones on my Hope Mini's and also the suspension pivot bolts on my Tracer?
Whats a comfortable saddle that's also resonable light?
Thanks,
Phil
DaFireMedic 01-13-2004, 02:56 PM Try Redmist first at ,http://titaniumfasteners.com
They are usually the cheapest, and very good customer service
Then try Race Bolts, they have a good selection
Racebolts.com
Whatever you do, don't go to SRP. They charged me $13.25 to ship a couple of small, lightweight aluminum bolts by UPS ground. (Redmist is from roughly the same geographic area, and charged $4.00 shipping for a much larger order). SRP won't return my emails nor my phone calls either to find out if it was a mistake. Forget em, they're not worth it.
Trevor! 01-14-2004, 01:43 AM Talk to david Glassman if you can, he is great with finding the best deals on Ti Bolts and also he has a nice big excel worksheet specifying what bolt sizes suit what items on ones bike...
Here is his email..

calgarydave 01-14-2004, 07:49 AM Hi,
Just curious to know what would be the approximate weight savings on the average bike if Ti bolts were used? I'm not interested in swapping every tiny screw (eg: shifter screws, pulley screws), just the common ones. Also, if you've done this already, what was the cost?
Am I missing anything?
- crank bolts, 2pcs
- chainring bolts & nuts, 15pcs (can these be bought? if so, where?)
- seatpost clamp bolt, 1pc
- V-brake mounting bolts, 4pcs
- suspension linkage bolts, ??pcs
- headset bolt, 1pc
- saddle clamping bolt, 1pc
- stem bolts, 2pcs
- bar end bolts, 2pcs
- bottle cage bolts, 2 pcs/cage
- shifter/brake mounting bolts, 2pcs
Thanks,
Dave
baker 01-14-2004, 08:21 AM Here is a link to a good bolt article by nino. It covers a lot of the info you're
looking for...

DaFireMedic 01-14-2004, 09:21 AM Look at Ninos article and it tells you where you can use aluminum bolts instead of Titanium. Aluminum is MUCH cheaper than Ti and the weight savings is much greater. You have to use Ti on the stem bolts, seatpost clamp bolt, saddle clamp bolt, etc, but most others can be aluminum with no problem, and Its sometimes 1/4 the cost. Also, get the spreadsheet from DavidG, it gives some approximate prices (its about 6 months old now, but I've found that the prices haven't changed too much).
Phantomtracer 01-14-2004, 10:05 AM I read the Nino article but it doesn't address bolt thread pitch. Is there a standard pitch that most bolt use?
Thanks,
Phil
DaFireMedic 01-14-2004, 09:56 PM if your bolt is an M5, then any M5 of the same length should work, etc.
Lets see if the new font works....
MaLoL 01-16-2004, 11:02 PM I changed all my bike steel bolts to alu. bolts and no problem. I use m5 and m6 bolts from a motorbike tunning shop. They cost me only 0,50euro each one and you can find them in several anodized colours.
BUT i must say that i am very careful about how to tightening tham. After all, good mecanics donīt use wrench measuring tools, just have to know how to tighten them by the feeling... ;)

Standard Pitches are:
M5 uses 0.8mm pitch
M6 uses 1.0mm pitch
M8 uses 1.25mm pitch
email me amartin@hyperbolts.com for more info.
